Afterthoughts

Spoilers: Everything up to and including The Long Goodbye

"Why did she pick me?" Elizabeth turned as a voice interrupted her thoughts. John stood at the door to the balcony, then walked forwards. Behind him, the door slid shut.

"Sorry?"

John stood next to her and leaned on the rail, their arms just touching.

"Why did Phoebus choose me as Thalan's host?"

"I, I don't know." John turned to look at her face.

"Seriously, it makes no sense. Why didn't she choose someone like Rodney? You could kick his ass normally, let alone when she was in control."

She couldn't help but smile.

"Well thank you for the compliment John, but I honestly don't know. She could read my mind, but it didn't work the other way, remember?" John shuddered slightly and looked away

"Yeah. I remember. I remember pointing a blaster down the corridor waiting for you to step out. I remember the adrenalin rush when he thought he'd got you."

"Hey." She grabbed his arm. "That wasn't you. Caldwell was right, it wasn't us."

"Yeah. Listen I know it wasn't us but about that kiss..." His voice trailed off awkwardly, and he blushed slightly. Elizabeth saw this, and grinned.

"John, it wasn't us. Don't worry about it. We're fine."

"Good. I always seem to be complaining to women about how I...you know what? Never mind."

"You mean the time you kissed Teyla?" John's head snapped around, a look of terror in his eyes.

"Ah. You heard about that." Elizabeth cocked her head to the side, and raised an eyebrow.

"I am in charge of this city remember, I hear about most things." John grimaced

"I'll have to remember that."

Elizabeth waited a moment, then continued playfully

"I also heard Thalan tell Teyla that you care for her."

"Well, that's true. I care about her as a friend, but you gotta know, I don't see her like that"

"John." She cut him off with a raised hand, grinning broadly. "It's fine, really. I've got to get back to work. Oh, and by the way." She turned back at the entrance to the control room, a mischievous expression lighting up her face. "Nice kiss." She laughed at his shocked expression, and went inside.

Alone on the balcony, John stared out across the ocean, a broad grin on his face. Nice kiss eh? Maybe there was some hope left after all!

The End!

Just a short fic I wrote in about 5 minutes, but seriously, why the hell would Phoebus have chosen John?
