Chapter 1
"Tadashi is here."
Hiro looked up from his studies at the empty space. He sighed, turning his attention back to the papers on his desk.
"Tadashi's gone," he said dejectedly. There was a certain degree of pain in his voice, but he didn't bother hiding it.
Every day, Baymax had insisted that his brother was there. And every day, Hiro would look up to see no one.
At first, he had thought that the robot was just trying to comfort him. But he soon realized that that wasn't the case. Baymax would repeat the phrase over and over again... so much that it was starting to annoy him.
Hiro had thought it was an error of some kind. But Baymax's scanner was functioning normally, and Hiro could find nothing wrong with his programming.
Tadashi was gone. He knew that.
But a small part of him longed so desperately for that to be false. A part of him that would look up every time Baymax said those words, hoping to be proven wrong.
Each time, he saw nothing.
And each time, it crushed him more than the last.
"Tadashi."
Hiro frowned noticeably. "He's gone, Baymax."
"Tadashi." The robot repeated.
Hiro felt tears blur his vision. "Tadashi's gone!" He yelled, a bit louder than he'd meant to. "Stop trying to tell me otherwise–"
His voice trailed off when his eyes fell upon Baymax.
The robot was staring into space, at what seemed to be nothingness.
"B-Baymax?" Hiro whispered.
"Tadashi is here." Came the monotonous reply.
For the first time, those words sent chills down Hiro's spine. This couldn't be. Baymax had to be wrong.
But what if he wasn't...?
"Come on, Baymax." Hiro led the robot to his computer. "Let's check that scanner again."
He had already checked to see that all the components were working. Now, he was going to connect the scanner to his computer so he could see exactly what Baymax was seeing.
Hiro synced Baymax's scanner, then typed a few words into the computer so that he was sure the program would work.
He swallowed.
"Scan the room, Baymax."
Hiro felt a wave of fear wash over him. He was so afraid that Baymax had been right... but even more terrified that the robot had been wrong.
"Scan complete," came the reply.
Slowly, a map of the room began to form on the screen.
Hiro gasped, and his breath caught in his throat.
Everything was as he knew it. But standing next to the bed was a tall boy with a baseball cap and a familiar smile.
A boy who wasn't supposed to be alive.
