Sonny Bonds
Sonny Bonds sat across from Marie Wilkans at Arnie's.
This was the woman for whom he had given so much, the hooker he had saved from the streets and given a new life. Sonny loved her more than life itself, more even than his career, and that was all the more reason for him to protect her from the likes of Jessie Bains and other criminal elements.
He took Marie's hand in his and looked into her brown eyes. Sometimes he saw her haunted still by her past.
He knew he couldn't turn back the clock. He could only love her as his own flesh and blood.
He kissed her hand and said, "It'll be all right, Marie. I'm here."

Marie looked at Sonny Bonds as he kissed her hand.
This was the man she wouldn't get serious with because he wanted to be a police officer, but now she realized that she was seriously in love with him, whether she wanted to be or not.
The pain of her former life made her doubt that she could live a normal life with him. Nonetheless, Sonny promised Marie that he wouldn't let anybody hurt her, especially Jessie Bains.
"My white knight," she said with a smile.
Sonny kissed her. She kissed him back. Their future was uncertain, but they were both survivors, and they intended to go on surviving.
"Let's order something light and fast," she said. "I want to get to dessert."
