Author's Note: The song is Thunder by Boys Like Girls. So many of their songs remind me of the LOST Jate/Jacket relationships from Jack's point of view. You guys should seriously check them out if you haven't heard of them. Anyways, read and review. Enjoy!
Today in the blink of an eye, I'm holding onto something and I do not know why I tried.
"Kate, I love you. And I know you love me. It's pretty obvious."
"Yeah. So?"
"So," I said, grabbing on of her hands, "I want to be in a serious relationship with you. How come…why don't you want to be in a relationship with me?"
Kate pulled back her hand and said, "I just don't, Jack. If you really loved me, you wouldn't be pushing me into a serious relationship. If you really loved me you would wait until I was ready."
"Kate, I'm not pushing you. I just want to know why," I replied. Then I looked away from her.
Waves rolled onto the shore and hit our bare feet. I watched them and then slowly looked back at Kate.
Your eyes are the brightest of all the colors.
Kate's hazel orbs sparkled in the moonlight. I gazed into her eyes and she stared right back into my brown eyes. "Why, Kate?" I asked.
She sighed. "I just can't get into a serious relationship. It never works. And besides, my life's been hectic. I wouldn't be able to stay in a relationship because I have to run," Kate explained. Tears glistened in her eyes.
"Kate, you don't have to run," I said.
She sobbed and then nodded. "Yes I do, Jack. You don't understand. I did a horrible thing. If they catch me I'll probably get life," Kate said. The tears that shimmered in her hazel orbs escaped and then cascaded down her cheeks.
I wanna let you know how much I feel your pain.
I slowly wrapped my arms around Kate and pulled her into a hug. She buried her head in my chest and sobbed. "Shh, Kate. Shh. It's okay. It's okay," I soothed.
"I'm sorry," she murmured. "I'm so sorry. I just can't get in a relationship," she added.
"Yes you can, Kate," I said.
She pulled away. "No, Jack. Not now. I can't right now." Her sobs had ceased and she looked at me seriously.
I want a simple explanation.
"But why, Kate?"
She was quiet. Kate glanced at me and murmured, "I don't want you to get hurt."
"Why would I get hurt?" I asked.
"Every time I love someone they always end up getting hurt. And I love you too much to watch you get hurt."
I tried to read between the lines. I tried to look in your eyes. Today I'm on my own.
I looked into Kate's eyes but she looked away from me. "Kate," I said.
"What?" she asked, still not looking at me.
I put my hand under her chin and made her face me.
Do you know you're unlike any other? You'll always be my thunder.
Kate looked at me as tears stained her cheeks.
"Oh, Kate."
"What?" she asked.
"Are you trying to protect me?"
She slowly nodded. "Every man that I've ever loved ends up getting hurt or killed. I can't let that happen to you. I love you too much," Kate replied.
Today's a winding road that's taking me to places that I didn't want to go.
I looked at her surprised. "Kate, I won't get hurt."
"Yes you will, Jack!"
"If you don't run I won't get hurt."
She looked away from me again and said, "I have to run, Jack."
I sighed. Then Kate pulled away from me again. "I'm so sorry, Jack. I just have to run."
"Kate, I can get you lawyers and…"
"No, Jack. It's sweet of you to offer, really, but I'm used to running." Then without another word she walked away.
I'm holding onto something and I do not know why I tried.
I watched her walk away, watched her let go, and watched her move on. But I never let go of her. I kept holding on.
