Disclaimer: I don't own Fruits basket. A/N: date-4-12-2008. I wrote this after reading the first vol. of Furuba. Enjoy.
School was out for the day…all afternoon the sky had been heavy with fluffy leaden gray clouds. From time to time a peek of sunshine would break through and the day would become that much warmer. At three o'clock however… "Hurry up, Honda-san!" Yuki yelled agitated. Tohru glanced up and struggled to be released from Arisa's loving grasp.
"Honda-san!" came the yell again, more urgently. "Coming!" she escaped and ran up to where Yuki was standing beside the large double doors. "Sorry I took so long. Um…are you ready to-?" "Walk home? Yes." From Yuki's curt tone, Tohru figured that Kyo had said something to make him upset.
She pushed one side of the doors open and Yuki slipped out. Kind of hurt but wanting to understand his abruptness, she followed. They walked steadily for fifteen minutes before Tohru decided to break the ice. "You know, like I told you a couple of weeks ago. It's alright to tell me what's on your mind." He looked thoughtful but didn't answer. Tohru frowned and stopped walking; Yuki went several paces ahead. The sky roiled and rumbled turning darker by the second. Then as if the Gods said let it rain, it rained.
Large hard drops splashed down on her head soaking her navy blue uniform. Yuki hadn't stopped and was almost gone from her sight. She heaved her shoulders and took off running," Sohma-kun! Wai-! Aggh!" He looked over his shoulder; Tohru had slipped in a puddle of mud and banged her shin on a round gray rock hidden beneath the dirt. She sat there clutching her sodden sock covered ankle and if Yuki looked hard enough into her face he would see two tiny tears sliding out of her tawny brown eyes.
"Here," he said, extending his arm to her. She tried to crack a smile but ended up grimacing instead. "Easy there, girl," he said soothingly, leading her to a dry patch of ground beneath a large weeping willow. From there they could still see the footpath but be sheltered from the storm. Tohru settled onto the ground silently while Yuki opened his messenger bag. He dug around the few books in there and withdrew a thin blue scarf. "I know it isn't much…but it may ease the pressure," Yuki said as he leaned over and wound the scarf twice around her ankle. He finished with a small knot; gently setting it down he allowed her to fold and unfold her legs.
"Thanks. It feels better already," Tohru said, shyly looking at him from underneath her bangs. Yuki reclined back one hand draped carelessly on his upraised knee. "Sohma-kun, I…ever since you and Kyo-kun brought me back from my Grandpa's house, I have wanted to get to know you guys better," she said breathlessly. He kept his eyes on the ground, again wondering why she wasn't repulsed by the knowledge of the family curse.
Tohru laid her hand on his sleeve; he started. "To me, Shigure-san, Kyo-kun and you are family so please…if something's bothering you, let me know." She smiled at him sweetly and slid her hand into his. Impulsively Yuki tightened his fingers, gripping her hand, unexpectedly drawing his face closer. Tohru started to say something and then stopped; she contented herself by studying the delicate curves of Yuki's face. "No. You're wrong, Honda-san. It should be me thanking you not the other way around," he said softly.
Even though only five inches remained between them, she didn't dare reach out to him while his lips grazed her cheek. The rain fell steadily capturing the moment preserving forever in Tohru's memory. When it stopped, she and Yuki slowly continued their way home…
A/N: so what did you think? I didn't realize it was so fluffy at the time…oh well. Please review.
