Of the Sun and Moon
The moon, that gleaming circle surrounded by stars. Always showing the Earth its strong, bright side, disguising its craters and flaws with light. The moon came out night after night to bring light into his dark world. So many faces, so many emotions that thing brought to the surface, unashamed to show itself openly to him. It reminded Zuko of her.
The sun, that blazing light in the sky surrounded by clouds, brought life to an otherwise barren wasteland. Every day it shone there, even after a long and rainy day where the Earth itself was painted gray, it came out anyway, revealing that it had been there with you all along. It brought light to her world, enabling her to see all the beautiful things around her. Even as it sank down into the horizon it painted her world with dazzling colour. It reminded Katara of him.
The moon was the only constant in his life, his only certainty. Every night it would rise without fail. It endowed him with strength even though the moon itself was so fragile. He'd once witnessed its constant form flicker in a moments hesitation; a break in its eternal life. He had held his breath, begging it to come back, to return to him. At last it had, bringing Zuko the strong message that it would be there for him, with him, forever.
She loved the sun. Katara loved the warmth on her face, the assurance it gave her of tomorrow. And yet her destiny, her future, the whole world rested on the day it would leave her. In that day of darkness she would have to win that war, bring an end to a century. The sun was her enemy. Her opposite. But she sensed that without the sun her own life would not be. Even thought the world rested on its disappearance, she wished that sun would stay there with her, forever.
