Disclaimer – I don't own Harry Potter.
It was the last meeting of the D.A. before Christmas. Everyone had put up his or her cushions, everyone except Neville, whose cushion was lying in the middle of the floor. Harry had gone back to the Gryffindor tower, leaving Ron and Hermione alone to straighten up the Room of Requirement.
"Ronald!" Hermione sighed, sounding exasperated, "You can't put these books with those books, they have nothing in common!"
"Hermione, it doesn't matter where the books go as long as we put them up!" Ron retorted angrily.
"Fine, but when Harry can't find the books, I'll let him know who's fault it is." Hermione stormed off to the bookshelf on the other side of the room. She did this partly to straighten the shelves, but mostly so she could get away from Ron.
Once Hermione finished tidying up that side of the room, she realized she had no excuse to stay over there and would have to return to the side where Ron was slowly cleaning. Hermione began to walk to the other side of the room, determined not to pay Ron the slightest bit of attention. As she reached the middle of the room, her foot caught on the cushion left out by Neville and she began to fall forward. Hermione let out a small scream as she braced herself for impact. She waited, but she never hit the ground. When she opened her eyes, she saw Ron holding her. He had run forward when he heard Hermione scream and had caught her in the knick of time. Hermione stood up but she didn't let go of Ron and he didn't let go of her. The two teenagers looked up above them and saw mistletoe that had been placed there in preparation for the holiday season.
Hermione looked up at Ron. He leaned down and kissed her softly on the lips and soon broke away. Then Hermione stood on tiptoe and Ron kissed her again, longer and more passionately.
In that moment, all the feelings for each other that they had harbored for the past few years came out. Had Neville not forgotten his cushion, it never would have happened. They never would have returned to the common room smiling and holding hands. They never would have dated for four years. They never would have gotten married. They never would have had a happy life together. Their love almost never happened.
