Scars (The drabble that started it all is now AU for the Hell and High Water verse)

It had been nearly eighteen months since Dean had last seen Kara. They had agreed to go their separate ways burying everything they felt, but when Sam came across a familiar name in the news, things changed. He had to know what happened.

Kara knew he was there the minute she walked in. She could feel it. It was what made her a great hunter. She bypassed the parlor and headed directly to her room with Dean close behind. He was grumbling on about the incident like he knew the story. He didn't. He knew what she had told the police and from that had jumped to conclusions. Kara simply went about her business as if he wasn't there.

She kicked off her sneakers and pulled off her socks. "I wanna know what really happened!" Dean boomed slamming his fist down on the footboard of the bed. Kara pulled the clip from her hair, letting the amber strands tumble down her shoulders. She just ignored him. Grabbing the end of her t-shirt, she pulled it up over her head. She shivered a bit as his fingers touched her neck. He pulled her hair back revealing the scar.

"Just missed my spine." she explained. His thumb gently brushed the skin. She drew in a wavering breath and continued, "I shouldn't have gone after him alone, but that son of a bitch killed my sister." Dean stepped forward and put his arms around her, pulling her close to his chest. She let her head fall back against him, feeling the relief of the truth. She never had to lie to him.

Dean put his cheek against her forehead, "I would have done the same for Sam."

Dreams

He grinned devilishly as he watched her cross the bedroom. Her fingers brushed the antique furniture. Her bare feet were silent on the hardwood floor. Her amber hair was gathered loosely behind her head. An endless strand of beads dangled from her neck, down between her breasts. Her favorite garnet silk slip skimmed her curves. The cream lace trim brushed her thighs. This was what he imagined an autumn goddess would look like. As she turned her smile to him, the beads of tiger eye and amber caught the light.

He'd dreamed like this before, every fall for the last few years, as October drew near, but this time something was different. As she moved closer, the usual feeling of warmth disappeared, replaced by an icy shadow. The beads lifted into the air. They were not alone. Her face changed. She felt it too. Suddenly the beads yanked tight, pulling her backwards. He leaped forward expecting her to lash out at her attacker, but her eyes rolled back as she was dragged into the darkness. He reached for her and called her name. The room vanished and he screamed for her as he fell into the pitch black.

He awoke with a start, gasping for breath. His brother, in the next bed, wiped at his eyes "Dean?"

"Damn job!" he exclaimed as he got up and headed for the bathroom, "Ruined a perfect sex dream!" The door slammed and, with a sigh, Sam went back to sleep. Dean couldn't sleep. He splashed his face with water and sank to the floor. Resting his elbows on his knees, he held his head in his hands. He couldn't go back to the "good part". All he saw was Kara disappearing in the dark. Something was wrong. It was time to head south.
