Jamie Waite held open the door for his best friend, Catie Roth, as they entered Chinese Heaven, the new Chinese fast-food restaurant.
Catie looked around, then place was nice, but Chinese food wasn't really her favorite. But Jamie was paying so she guessed it didn't matter.
"Let's order," Jamie said, urging her towards the counter.
They ordered and the waitress took their food up to the front, dropping two fortune cookies on the tray.
They sat down in a booth in the back and opened their cartons. They began talking about school, music, and laughed about the ongoing battle of affection between Val and Tyler.
"It's so ridiculous, they should just come out and tell each other how they feel," Catie said, taking a sip of her coke.
"Definitely, I'm getting sick of watching them make goo-goo eyes behind each others backs all the time," Jamie agreed.
They both nodded, looking away from each other, neither one knowing they were thinking the exact same thing.
Man, Jamie thought, I should take my own advice and tell Catie how I feel.
Too bad I don't listen to myself, Catie thought, then maybe I could tell Jamie the truth.
Finally, Jamie broke the silence, " You ready to head back?," he asked.
"Sure," Catie replied, getting up.
"Wait, we didn't open up our fortune cookies," Jamie said.
"Oh please," Catie scoffed, " Do you honestly believe that part of your fortune or life can be pre-decided by a manufacturing couple who stuffs tiny paper readings into a boomerang shaped cookie?"
Jamie laughed, " Maybe not, but they can be fun to read, come on," he said handing he one.
He cracked his open and read the tiny paper:
Love is knocking at your door, Go answer it!!
He laughed to himself at the irony.
"Well, what does it say?," Catie asked.
"Nothing, open yours," Jamie said.
Catie looked at him for a moment, then she bent her head and cracked her cookie. Her eyes scanned the paper:
Your rare smile and mysterious nature is admired by your true love.
Catie folded it up neatly and slipped it into her pocket. Hmm..interesting, she thought.
"What does yours say?," Jamie asked.
"Nothing to your interest, ready to go?," Catie replied.
"Sure," Jamie said.
They headed to his bike and strapped on their helmets. They rode to Catie's house silently.
Finally, they reached her driveway and Jamie walked her to her door.
"Thanks for dinner Jamie, don't forget our movie night tomorrow," Catie said.
"How could I forget? It's the highlight of my life," Jamie joked.
Catie smiled.
Jamie stared at her for a minute, "Did I ever tell you that you have a beautiful smile?," he asked, " Probably not because you hardly ever do, but it's really beautiful Catie," he smiled, " See you tomorrow."
He walked back to his bike and rode off.
Catie went up to her room and read the fortune cookie again with a smile.
Maybe Chinese food still wasn't one of her favorites, but she sure did like Fortune Cookies a lot more.
A/N: I got the inspiration for this when I opened up my fortune cookie:
You have a curious smile and mysterious nature
He he, now you know where Catie's came from! LOL! Ciao
