01; Introduction
"Class, we have a new student today."
Everyone turns their attention to the new kid who is standing in front of the class. We rarely get new kids at this school, so when we did, it was big news. Our teacher made a gesture to the kid standing at her desk. She bends down to his level, because he is shorter then most of the kids in class, and says something to him that I can't hear. I can't see his face or what he looks like because he is hiding his face in his hands.
"Could you tell the class what your name is?"
He says something inaudible. She asks him to speak up a bit. He whispers just loud enough, the class leaning forward to hear what he was saying.
"Simon."
"Well," She says brightly, grabbing onto his hand and guiding him over to our table. "This is where you will be sitting." She waits for the other boys at my table to look at Simon. "I trust that you guys will make Simon feel comfortable?" They all nod.
"We will, Ms. Gross!"
"Thank you, Jack." She says to me before turning back to the new kid, "If you need any help, you can ask me or you can ask anyone at the table." With that, she walks off to help the other students.
The boys around me went back to doing their arts'n'crafts like we were suppose to be doing, but I wasn't. I stop and look at the new kid. He has dark tanned skin, with dark hair to match, and he's also got this goofy smile on his face. His eyes are a beautiful blue shade, as if you were looking into two small oceans. Hopefully he doesn't see me staring at him like some creeper.
He grabs some paper and crayons and begins to color. Of course he'd be one of those kids would colors inside of the lines and tries to make his picture look neat. Then I realized he's drawing a picture of what looks like a beach, with palm trees and sand and even little boys who all had smiles on their faces. That makes me smile to myself.
"Nice picture," I say before I even have time to stop myself. He really is creative.
"Thanks." His voice is quite, and if I weren't right next to him, I probably wouldn't have heard it. His cheeks are also red, which I guessed was from embarrassment.
Something tells me I'm going to like this new kid.
