A/N: I haven't read everything that's out there but I hope this is an original idea. Hope you all enjoy!
Summary: Sometimes darkness and light aren't as easy to define as we think. It's not that hard to be wrong. One shot, Yugi's POV.
Barred
It had been two days since Yugi gave the word. His dark side was immediately taken into custody and incarcerated without hesitation. This was the last one we managed to imprison, making the total three. We hope to have them removed from society as soon as time permits. We must protect society of what is evil and dark, because the only thing they will do is harm society.
………..ooooooo………
Common sense. That's what they told me it was. I guess they were right, but did they really know him? Then again, if I am the hikari, then he must be the yami. We can't both be hikaris, that just doesn't work. Besides, you can't really gauge what's good and what's evil if you don't have one or the other to compare them against. The other yamis were bad. My yami tried to kill Kaiba once. He's just like the other two, I'm sure of it.
"Yugi?"
"Yes, pharaoh?"
"Why are you being so distant, Yugi? I thought we are friends."
"We are, I guess."
"I have never felt so far from you, hikari."
"Yeah well, isn't it obvious? I'm out here and you're in there."
"I didn't do anything wrong."
"But I couldn't trust you, pharaoh. That's why I put you in there."
"It was you?"
"Yeah."
Through the darkness of the cell, I could hardly see him. I'm not sure if it's ironic or just plane lighting, but the only thing I could see clearly, were his eyes. They were more hurt and betrayed than angry. It was awhile before he actually said anything. Maybe he was so speechless that he couldn't react. Or maybe he was trying hard to figure out what to say next. Sometimes it was hard to tell with the pharaoh.
"You have always believed in justice, right pharaoh?"
He didn't say anything.
"I had to do what was right, for the city."
Still he didn't say anything.
"You almost hurt Kaiba."
Silence.
"You would have done the same thing if you were in my position."
And still, he remained silent. His expression was neutral. It was not to say that he was uncaring or that he 'lost it, so to speak. But it was that thinking face. He always looked at others that way, but never me.
The pharaoh stepped as close to me as he could and grasped onto the bars, pressing his face against the cold metal.
"There always going to be a yami wherever there's a hikari. In this case, Yugi, one will be gone and one will remain. The city is yours."
That was the last thing he said to me. After that, the pharaoh retreated to the back of the cell where it was darkest and remained there until the execution. I wasn't there when they executed the pharaoh and the other two yamis, but Bakura and Malik were. They told me it was clean and quick. A death by hanging.
Somehow, even after it was over, I felt that something was wrong. Sometimes things aren't as clear cut as we like to have them. But I'm sure it was the right thing had been done.
He was the yami.
It was he who was the yami.
There couldn't have been another possibility.
He was the only choice.
He was the one.
They made the right decision.
I am sure of it.
