The shining sun shot rays of burning heat into the Impala as Dean and Sam Winchester crossed a desert road. Sam leant forward groaning, the hot weather always made him drowsy. Dean however was in high spirits, they were making perfect time on their drive to their next supernatural mission.
It had been awkward, since their father's death. Dean had blamed himself and now Sam knew that, both had been awkward around each other ever since, finding it unnatural to talk about ordinary things and to discuss Dean's grief further was a definite no-no. They let it be.
But how would they overcome this wretched silence?
Sam fidgeted in his seat as his back stuck to the leather seats, he closed his eyes and leant against the side window. Dean shot him a quick glance before turning his head back to the empty road.
"You okay man?"
Sam grunted in response, Dean gave a small laugh at Sam's grumpy mood. His younger brother had been complaining of headaches since he had woken up.
"Shall I be your radio?" He asked with a grin. Without waiting for a response he began half singing half humming the first thing that came into his head.
Sam opened his eyes slowly, frowning and sitting up straight.
"Are you singing…Pinky and the Brain?" He questioned him with disbelief.
Dean nodded grinning. "Remember Sammy? You used to love that show, you were obsessed with those two mice."
"No I wasn't." Sam argued wrinkling his nose.
"You were." Dean insisted, drumming his hands on the wheel as he hummed it again. "We're like Pinky and the Brain." He then stated.
Sam shot him a strange look, his brother was always in unusually chatty and good moods when he was in pain or moody.
"We aren't." He said, rolling his eyes.
"Yes we are, you're Pinky. I'm the Brain, the Brain is the man, he comes up with all the ideas." Dean said admiringly.
"I am not Pinky!" Sam said hotly, fidgetting once again in his seat. "You're more like Pinky, I'm the Brain I'm smarter."
"Why cos you went to college?" Dean rolled his eyes this time.
Sam sighed. "Forget it."
"Oh no no, now I'm intrigued. What makes you think you'd be so smarter?" Dean said, despite his mood he was bored and Sam had been no fun on this journey so far. Picking arguments with his brother wasn't something he'd normally do for entertainment, but his brother got so god damn awkward and he couldn't help finding it amusing.
"Dean…"
"Sam…"
Sam sighed again. "I don't know. Well, I did try a lot harder in school you know."
"So? I still don't think you have any right to say you are like Brain from Pinky and the Brain, that's just stupid, Sam."
Sam gasped at him crossly. "What? What?! You yourself just said you were like the Brain!"
Dean smiled. "Yeah but when I say it, it's cute."
"Sounds like something Pinky would say." Sam mumbled, looking out at the road ahead.
"Aha!" Dean slapped his hands on the wheel. "See? You are obsessed with it!"
Sam tutted at how stupid he had been to walk into that, he should have just shut up. "You-re…you're an idiot!" He said exasperated.
"Whatever fills these awkward car silences, Sammy."
"I-" Sam cut himself off. He knew there had been a reason behind it all. He eyed Dean cautiously, who kept his eyes straight ahead on the road.
Sam exhaled slowly. He worried so much for his brother, and unlike Dean he showed it. Still, his wise-crack older brother didn't seem to want the worry.
"So…" Sam started, "What are we going to do today Dean?"
A smile grew on Dean's face. "The same thing we do every day, Sammy; try to take over the world!"
