Cemetery
"Miss Liddell? I am sorry to bother you, but we are going to be closing soon. If you do not mind making your way to the entrance?"
Edith Liddell turned to face the speaker, nodding her head in acknowledgement at his words. She had heard his approaching footsteps, amplified by the heavy rain, well before he had spoken and was therefore not surprised by his appearance. With one last glance at her eldest sister's grave, she turned away from the headstone and made her way towards the entrance to leave before the other workers shut the gate for the night.
Glancing up at the sky from the relative safety of the umbrella she was holding, Edith saw that the sky had taken on the black colour of the night as opposed to the gray it was earlier in the afternoon when she had arrived for her weekly visit.
The time she spent with her family.
As she walked down the single straight path that led to the entrance, the dull throbbing in her legs and the occasional sting from her feet told Edith that she had stayed a lot longer than the original hour she intended. Not that she was displeased by the outcome as this was often the case of her visits to her family. She would probably stay the whole night too if it were not for the people who worked there reminding her that she needed to leave because they were closing for the day.
She was such a frequent visitor that she knew the names of everyone who worked at the cemetery and vice versa.
As soon as she stepped outside, she heard the clanging of the gates that signaled that the cemetery was officially closed. If she could, Edith would visit everyday. Unfortunately, her livelihood took precedent and she worked most days. The only available time that she had to visit her family was Sunday afternoons.
With one more glance at her family's final resting place, Edith slowly made her way home where no one but her pets were waiting for her.
Just as it had been for the last four years.
