Hey guys! So this is a poem that I wrote for an English assignment last year and I'm actually really pleased with the way it turned out. So I figured I would share it with you! It's a rhythmic ballad so I did have a little trouble finding words that had the right amount of syllables and said what I wanted to say. And then there was the whole rhyming bit of it. So it was a little challenging in places, haha.

Enjoy!

"Oh, May the odds be yours to claim"

The woman did declare.

Her voice was filled with bubbly joy,

That fought the dark grim air.

ll

Upon the stage she did stand tall,

As if at a parade.

For she was from the Capitol,

And did not grasp the raid.

ll

On both her sides, her left and right,

Stood glass bowls large and proud.

Each bowl was filled with youngster's names,

The faces of the crowd.

ll

Oh, May the odds be yours to claim,

I wished this was a dream.

Twenty slips of paper held the,

Name of Katniss Everdeen.

ll

"As tradition," the women called,

"The girls are chosen first."

She quickly walks towards a bowl,

Her footsteps well rehearsed.

ll

In flourished sweep of graceful hand,

She plucked it from the nest.

The slip of parchment thin and white,

Awakened from its rest.

ll

Oh, May the odds be yours to claim,

The families clutched their hands.

Each child of theirs in palms of fate,

In danger of its plans.

ll

"Primrose Everdeen" she sang,

My sister's name was scrawled.

One single slip, one single chance,

And yet she still was called.

ll

Frozen from shock and filled with dread,

There must be a mistake.

The thing I'd tried so hard to stop,

My hands began to shake.

ll

I saw Prim walk toward the stage,

Her face as pale as snow.

I shove the crowd and push the guards,

I couldn't let her go.

ll

Pushing Prim behind my back,

I gasped to voice the words.

"I volunteer! I'll take her place!",

So she'll be as free the birds.

ll

Oh, the odds are not ours to claim,

Despite what they may say.

I'll fight for Prim, I will not die,

I'll make those bastards pay.

So there it is! Excuse that little bit of coarse language in the final line, it just worked. Well, I hope you enjoyed that and if you have any questions I would love to hear from you. I love hearing what you have to say even if its just one random word like 'cupcakes'. :)
