"Is dad going to be back tomorrow?" Sam asked, looking up through his getting long bangs.
"I don't think so, why?" Fourteen year old Dean answered, looking over the top of the comic he was looking through.
"Just wondering" Sam muttered and went back to playing with his small toy cars.
Dean watched him for a few more minutes as he got back in the race that was playing in his mind, playing with his cars. Sam never really asked if their dad was going to be back on a specific day, just if he was going to be back soon. Shrugging he went back to the cartoon-ized gore that was playing out for the Punisher.
Throughout the next day Dean caught Sam watching the door a lot and sighing almost just as much. The times he wasn't looking at the door he would reach into his backpack like he was making sure something was still there. When ever Dean would ask about it however Sam just would shrug and go back to watching TV. Through Breakfast and Lunch Sam would smile and at least look like he was happy.
After dinner rolled around however, Sam stopped even trying.
"Ok what's going on?" Dean asked after their dessert was gone.
"It's not important" Sam said, his head hanging a little.
"If it's bad enough to make you sad then yes, it is important"
Sam just shook his head again and Dean didn't feel like fighting to get him to talk.
"I'm going to take a shower" Dean mumbled and headed into the bathroom to do just that.
Upon leaving the bathroom in a puff of wet steam, Dean almost had to do a double take at his smiling little brother.
"What?"
"Come'ere" Sam said, patting the bed.
Making his way over to where Sam was he sat on the bed, cocking an eyebrow. "Ok now what?"
"I want you to have this" Sam said, pushing something into his hands.
Dean looked down at it and everything in his mind clicked and his heart clenched a pit painfully. It was a homemade card that didn't open, that said 'Happy Fathers Day' and used to say Dad under that. However Sam had crossed out Dad and wrote Dean.
"Is this why you wanted to know if dad would be here?" Dean asked, not looking up from the card.
"Yea, but you're here more than he is and more of a father, so I think you should have it"
"Sammy I," Deans voice caught in his throat as he pulled Sam to him, his head against his chest.
One of his hands wrapped around the back Sam's neck, the other that was still holding the card around his shoulders. Kissing the top of Sam's head, he tried to quell the tears that were threatening to break out.
"Thank you Sammy" Dean said against his hair.
"You're welcome, Happy Fathers Day Dean"
