Second Best

A Drew-centric free-verse about favorites with a dash of Aphrodite, a sprinkle of McLean, and just a teeny tiny hint of Beauregard. It doesn't feel so good to be second, does it?

ATTENTION, READERS!: This author does not own the Percy Jackson & The Olympians nor The Heroes of Olympus book series and any of its characters. The author will have to wait for the series to end before she/he can finally say that she/he owns it!

"A mother never plays favorites"

(But you're no F-O-O-L, you have those hypnotizing dark eyes and a brain,)

Of course, you know better than to believe that

(You aren't dumb; you know what a lie is, based from experience)

Maybe it's because you aren't pretty enough to get some appreciation from her

(But of course you are; you're drop dead gorgeous, more of a knock out than she will ever be)

Or maybe, it's because you aren't like your mother, the love goddess

(But you are, way more than she would be even if she tried)

Yet you know in your heart that you'll never be her favorite,

And it's not because of Piper McPerfect or Silena Goodygard,

(Well, maybe it is, but that's just a small slice of the problem,)

It's because you're DREW, and sadly, you aren't a candidate in the pageant.

(They may have taken the crown, but you're the camp witch, and no one can steal that away from you.)

...

Still, you hold your head up high, add another coat of lip gloss and just be you,

Because being you is what you do, and you don't hide who and what you are just to impress.

And sometimes, just sometimes, it's okay not to be number one.

...

But of course, you can't be second best forever. Right, darling?
Cause let's face it, it doesn't always feel so good being second best.
