This is the fourth of a series of fanfics I plan to do where I get the quote of the day off of a list and then write whatever it makes me think of. I hope this turns out as good as I want it to.

Pairing(s): Austria/Hungary, mentioned Sweden/Finland

Quote: "All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on." by Henry Ellis

Austria looked across the room at Hungary while their bosses signed the document that cancelled their marriage.

They spent the entirety of the day before making promises of what life was going to be like after this. After all, no piece of paper could stop how they felt about each other. Many nations continued relationships without a document that said they had to be together, right? There was no need to define their love in legal terms when their hearts already knew.

Unfortunately, their words did nothing to quell the pain this was causing both of them.

They did not want to split apart. Of course the war had hurt both of them but this would do very little to help in either of their opinions. It would only prolong the inevitable. It was not going to solve anything in the long term.

Their bosses' opinions, along with the bosses of the other nations' opinions, were the only things that really mattered, though. Countries were very rarely given a choice in such things. They had been lucky to get their way about marrying in the first place. Some nations were together for hundreds of years without ever getting officially married, after all. One had to look no further than Sweden and Finland to realize that that the truth.

Hungary was far more optimistic about the entire situation than he had been but that was nothing new. She always seemed to try and make the best of things while he was often less certain and more cautious. The female was almost positive that this would not affect their relationship. The male was positive it would. Living apart was never good for couples who were used to being together, after all. It would now be much easier for them to make separate relations with other countries, to push each other farther and farther away no matter how much they insisted or promised they would not.

Some things were easier said than done.

He did not doubt either of their feelings, though. They loved each other. This would just be difficult, that was all. It was not impossible to stay together. It would just take adjusting to and he hoped they would be able to deal with the new aspects of each other. They had survived more than these kind of changes in the past, after all.

He supposed they would just have to wait and see how things turned out.

Barring another huge incident like the war they had just gotten out of, things would probably be okay. He just hated to get his hopes up and then be disappointed. That had happened enough over his lifetime, after all. It was bound to happen to anyone who had lived as long as they had.

He was confident in his ability to hold on in this situation, though, even when it seemed like they were letting go. He also knew that Hungary would not let go without a fight. She was a warrior, even in emotional situations. He smiled at that thought.

Relationships were an art, he mused, and Austria was nothing if not an artist.

I know, a little shorter than the others have been but I did not really like the quote.
