Learning to Lean
Missing Scene from "Fool For Love"
| by Vanilla Temptress |

Summary: This is the missing scene from the porch scene at the end of "Fool For Love"

Disclaimers: If I owned Spike, I wouldn't have bothered to write this. Buffy, Spike, etc. all belong to the great and exalted Jossificus, he who makes the waves scream with upmost delight and the stars to shine their brightest so that they might please him.

Rating: G, for all of you nancyboys out there. (No, just kidding. But it *is* G)

Spoilers: Up to "Fool For Love", obviously.

Spike sat there, watching the beautiful Slayer. He figured she would tell him what was bothering her so much when she was ready. And if she didn't... he was going to stay there anyway. He wanted to be there for her, to comfort her and tell her everything would be okay - even though he wasn't quite sure it would be. *Did I really scare her?* he wondered. *Nah, that wouldn't scare this Slayer. It must be something more... but what?*

At first, Buffy was a little uncomfortable, letting the vampire see her cry like this. It just showed him how weak she was. But after awhile, she soon got to like his company. It was better than being alone, even if it was Spike. Finally she summoned the strength to say something.
"It's my mother."

Spike looked at Buffy, concern etched in his features. Slowly, he asked, "What's wrong with her?"

"She... she's going in for a cat scan. Staying overnight at the hospital for observation."

"Does Dawn know?"

She shook her head. "Not that I know of."

"Where is she?"

Buffy looked up at a window. "She's supposed to be in bed. I don't know if she's actually in there."

"Are you going to tell her?"

"I... I'm not sure... it's just too soon, you know? I figure, why worry her right now? We don't even know what's wrong."

"Maybe nothing's wrong."

She looked at him, and he saw just how scared she really was. It was a side of her he had never seen before.

"Yeah. Maybe." She didn't sound very optimistic. "And maybe tomorrow I'll wake up and find that evil decided to die and give me a break."

*Great. Now she's being sarcastic.* He was about to say something else, but at that moment she decided to lean against him. He realized that he should enjoy the contact, because it might never happen again. He put his arms around her, and she just let it all out. Her tears were staining his coat, but he didn't care. It was enough to have her in his arms, despite the circumstances. "It'll be alright," he soothed. The way he said it, she almost believed him.

The End...
