Title: I Know I Am August
Character: CJ, Toby
Category: mild angst
Pairing: CJ/Toby, CJ/Ben, mild Toby/Rena
Rating: G
Summary: Introspection, CJ and Toby Spoilers: Season 5
Author's Notes: (optional): Title comes from Whitman's Song of Myself. For Angie and Kells
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------
She's forty three years old and men are an alarming distraction.
She's forty three with a foreigner sending her cabbage, and an ex-been- missing for six years calling constantly.
He brings a picture of her in a bikini, with reminiscent strong thighs and toned everything.
The other man brings her vegetables.
And all she can think of - is that soon she'll be forty four.
--------------------
She watches him talk with his new aide, the hackles rising at the way the dark woman laughs. The hair on the back of her neck rising as she watches him laugh back. CJ cocks her head slightly, watching his hand lift slightly, motioning warmth to the newest senior aide. It's not a feeling of jealousy that skims her skin.
Maybe something of loss.
Of age.
-------------------
Ben's lips are warm, but not as warm as she remembers.
What she remembers involves and revolves the hot hot sun of California mornings and gritty sand in his hair when she tugged her fingers into it. She doesn't touch his hair when she kisses him. Just his skin.
And he smells like the beach - a winter beach.
-------------------
He feels old when he watches her. His fingers itch and ache; arthritis of his emotions. He wonder if lost love can cause aches in his knuckles. It hurts his chest to watch her smile with Ben. It makes his forearm throb when she laughs on the phone.
He feels old and aches from the (tumble) fall (autumn) of their relationship.
He thinks of her only by her age.
