Unexpected Comfort

Set Series 5 Episode 3. I was disappointed at the lack of Quinn during "The Quarterback" so I decided to do my own missing scene with her in.

All eyes turned to the small brunette as she entered the room. She had a small smile on her face, obviously fake, but a smile nonetheless. Kurt had left a seat empty for her; he knew she couldn't stay away when Finn was involved, she'd proved that multiple times. What Kurt hadn't been expecting was for Rachel to pull a chair over to the back corner, where her once-rival was sitting.

The two girls had never had the healthiest relationship. Not with Finn spending years switching between the two of them. All of that effort and hatred of one another seemed pointless somehow, now that he was gone. All the years of Quinn calling her man-hands and posting offensive comments on her MySpace videos seemed almost like friendly banter now after all Rachel had been through in the last few weeks. They had had the occasional friendly moments and neither girl had ever really hated the other, they had always secretly had a lot of respect for each other. After Quinn realised that her breakup with Finn was permanent this time, she was a lot more supportive to Rachel, and the two started a tentative friendship.

Quinn grabbed Rachel's arm gently and lead her out of the room, knowing that being in there was not what either of them needed right now. Rachel followed Quinn mindlessly until they reached the bleachers. They sat in about the spot that Rachel had broken up with Puck. Quinn wrapped her arms around Rachel and began to gently rock her, trying to soothe her, like you would to a baby.

"I'm sorry. For everything." Quinn started

"Me too." Rachel replied

Quinn knew her relationship with Finn had never been anywhere near as perfect as Rachel's. Finn and Rachel were meant to be together, to spend their lives together, and to grow old together. Quinn knew compared what Rachel must be feeling, she seemed heartless. But just like Rachel, Finn was her first love. They say you never really get over your first love. Quinn would agree with that, but she knew that she no longer felt that way for Finn. Yes, she loved him. But more as a friend, as a brother. She started to question whether she'd ever really loved him romantically at all. Their relationship had been more like a friends with benefits situation than real love towards the end. She had let herself become an emotionless robot, staying with Finn out of spite, just so Rachel couldn't have him. So Rachel couldn't win.

But there are no winners in life. Quinn knows that now. And all she could do was try to comfort the girl whose life she had tried to make into a living hell for years. And maybe that was enough.
