-1Hey everyone! So just wanted to let you know that I'm not planning on having any of the characters on the show here. This story is set when Aang and the others are at the northern water tribe, so they'll be to far away to take part in the story. Hope you guys enjoy, and please review!

Chapter 1: Goodbye
Lei opened her eyes slowly and she pulled her blanket off. She sat on the edge of her bed and rubbed her eyes, which were a pale green color. Getting up she nearly tripped on a sculpture that had rolled to her bedside. Lei was an earth bender, and in her spare time she liked to use that skill to make rock sculptures. The things she made ranged from tiny birds to human sized figures, and she hoped to open a shop one day. Unfortunately, she needed a lot of practice. She was able to get the basic shapes of things, but it was the textures that were hard for her.
After quickly running a brush through her long brown hair she pulled on her clothes, a tan long-sleeved shirt and green pants, and went to the kitchen. Her mother, a hard woman with brown hair like Lei's up in a tight bun, had already finished making breakfast, and she had moved onto scrubbing the counters. Quietly Lei grabbed her plate and left with it, eating as she walked outside and into their garden.
Because her father was a high ranking officer they could afford to keep a garden alive, and Lei liked to come out here to get away from her mom. She knew she loved her, but her mom could be very strict at times.
"Good morning!" came a voice from behind her, and Lei turned to see her dad standing there, dressed in his uniform. They hugged briefly and they sat together on the stone bench, her dad clasping his hands together nervously.
"Dad, is something wrong?" she asked quietly. He smiled at her and draped his arm over her shoulders.
"Well sweetie," he began softly. "I have to go away for awhile. Duty calls." he gestured to his soldier's uniform. Lei bit her lip to stop the tears that threatened to fill her eyes. No one could ever see her cry. Her dad looked at her sadly and hugged her. "Now, I've gone away before, I'll be back in a few months." Lei nodded and looked up at him.
"When are you leaving?" she asked. Her father took his arm back and sighed. "I was notified just now, I need to leave today." Lei tried to smile, and her dad gave her a crushing hug, kissing her on the forehead. They got up together and went back inside.
----
Lei and her mother stood in the doorway, waving until her dad walked turned out of sight. Before her mom could think of a chore to give her to keep her mind off of things, Lei ran to her room and slid the door shut. For the rest of the day she stayed there alone, and that night when her mom came to check on her she was asleep in her bed, tear stains on her cheeks. In her hand was a small sculpture, and when her mom took it from her she saw her husbands face staring back at her. Sniffling quietly she blew out the candles and left.
