"Edward?" I whispered, my voice hoarse from waking in the early morning.
I sat up in my bed. My eyes searched desperately in the darkness.
"Yes, Bella," my love breathed at my ear.
I sighed, content, as I felt his cold fingers push back a strand of hair.
"What woke you?" The curiosity was intensified with his worry.
I smiled in the darkness, knowing he could see.
"I just needed you here," I answered simply.
"I'll be here for as long as you want me, as long as you need me, as long as I'm keeping you safe." He didn't disguise the anguish in his voice too convincingly, so I began stroking his face, comforting him. I felt his cool hard lips press against mine, slowly, passionately. Then he lay me down again, lying next to me as he snaked his arms around my waist.
"Edward I'll want you forever, purely because I need you to live." I sighed knowing my words wouldn't be enough to get through to him.
"You say that now, when your life hasn't nearly begun. You have no idea what you're giving up, or what I'm taking away." He exhaled, his jaw turning rigid.
I laughed a humorless laugh, the only sound I could muster that wouldn't show how painful his words were to me. There was a short silence as we both processed things. I was about to speak, but he silenced me by softly pressing his finger to my lips.
"Sleep now, love. It's still early," his voice was harsh so I saw no point arguing. He pressed his lips to my hair then began humming my lullaby, within moments, my mind drifted into a dreamless sleep.
I awoke with Edward's arms still around me. As I stirred, he sat up, placing a blanket over me, noticing my shiver. As I began to protest, he just stared at me, the anguish still clear in his eyes.
"Edward, I love you. That's all that should matter," I pleaded, hoping to snap him out of the dark mood he was in.
"I know, but things are complicated." He half smiled, but it didn't touch his eyes.
I bit down on my lip and began fidgeting with my hands. He grasped them in his almost instantly and began playing with them. We were drifting closer, and I inhaled his scent, it calmed me. I leaned against his chest and stayed there, lost in thought.
After a much longer silence, I was snapped out of my train of thought.
"Bella," he questioned warily, wondering whether his words had troubled me, I guessed.
"Yes, Edward?" I smiled, satisfied that my voice hadn't given away my feelings.
His eyebrows furrowed together.
"What are you thinking?" he breathed.
I hesitated, not knowing how much to give away.
"I'm just thinking about… complications," I said sighing, making no effort to hide the hint of desperation in my voice.
"Ah," was all he said.
I grimaced before I spoke. "I need a human moment," I admitted reluctantly.
He gave a small nod and placed me on my feet in the direction of the bathroom.
