23 Hours before release of Contagion on to the Masses
"Dammit Jack, get some sleep, and I mean in your house, not the Bio-Lab" was the first words to break the eerie silence in the facility for some time. "I know, I know, but I'm so close to cracking this Andrew, I just know it." "You work too much, don't forget your security card on the way out, because I'm not getting it for you if you do." said Andrew as he walked out of the heavy steel doors leading to the underground parking lot. Jack Conner, a dedicated lab technician for "Discovery Bio-Engineering"Was working on a modified strain of the Flu, making it bond with only cancer cells. Then, hopefully these cells would be attacked by the body's immune system destroying them. Jack was very close to a major breakthrough, he already made a serum making white blood cells work extremely well in destroying cells bonded with this Flu strain. Unfortunately, when tested on rats and primates this Flu would attach and bond to neurons in the brain, specifically those around pain reception, speech and reasoning. These neurons being destroyed by the body's own immune system. It would also permanently turn certain hormones on, specifically those controlling anger. The result was a super-aggressive test subject that would stop at nothing to kill those not infected with the Flu strain. These subjects could not speak, understand language, react to pain ,or be reasoned with. Their actions were completely controlled by anger-induced adrenaline. This strain of flu was dubbed "The Green Flu" due to it turning infected neurons a darkish-green.
Jack had a perfectly good reason to be working late, his company's sponsors would be listening to his lecture on the Green Flu tomorrow. He was working on shutting off what made the Flu attach to neurons and hormone producing organs. Although he didn't know what caused it to do so. Jack needed to get a good look at an infected brain to see exactly what cells in the neurons were being infected. Although against strict regulations, he snuck an infected lab-rat into his lab, hoping to take a biopsy of his infected neurons. The rat was restrained, but not sedated, and in a specially designed brace immobilizing its limbs and cranium. As Jack turned to remove his bite-resistant gloves and retrieve his scalpel, the sleeve of his lab-coat was caught on a piece of metal from the Rat's brace, pushing it up and exposing his arm. Before Jack could react, the rat took this opportunity to bite down on his soft flesh. Withdrawing immediately, Jack was stunned....*Would the flu spread to me?* He thought *No... no, no. Not through saliva, Right?....I know, I'll just wash it and disinfect it, and I'll be OK.* After cleaning up his wound, Jack returned to his work, immediately realizing that through all the commotion, he'd unlocked the secret to curing cancer. Although it was too late, the rat that bit Jack was already infected with the Super-Aggressive strain, and unbeknown to him, Jack had become patient zero.
