Jenny walked down the street, hands in her pockets. She was a very shy and naive girl with short thick hair, and wore some old blue jeans. She had just been laid off from her job at a local grocery store. To be fair, she didn't really like her job anyway; most of her co-workers were rude to her and made fun of her because she was a little chubby. But it was still sad that she no longer had a way to pay her bills for herself, and they were due soon.
"I need to find a new job," Jenny said as she strolled along the sidewalk, looking around at the buildings she passed. As she walked a few more blocks, a building caught her eye. It was an old tavern, dark purple in color. A small paper sign was crudely taped on one of the four windows, reading "Help wanted".
Jenny sighed and paused before jay-walking across the road, towards the building. "Of all the places, really?" she groaned. She hated the idea of working at a bar, but it would pay.
She walked through the entrance to the bar, and looked around for the owner. She saw germs of all sizes, playing card games while guzzling their alcoholic beverages down their slimy green throats. She sighed and walked over to the counter to find a white blood cell cleaning a bar glass.
"What can I get for you, baby?" The man said in his raspy voice, smirking at her.
"Oh, uh, I'm just here about the 'help wanted' poster. I am in desperate need of a job." Jenny said shyly.
The man looked at her in shock and put down his glass. "What? That sign has been up for ages! Finally, someone that can get me out of this hell hole! Listen hun, the name is Oscar. I make, or should I say 'made', the drinks here. The owner's name is Tom. He leaves after eight o'clock, so he can see his wife n' kids."
The cell looked at her as if he had been blessed. Jenny looked at the time; it was eleven o'clock in the evening.
"I'll talk to Tom about you workin' here, but he won't have much of a choice now that I will be quitting. Expect to start tomorrow at eleven in the morning, and don't be late. Last time I was ten minutes late, there was a hole through the window. There are also two other employees, both white blood cells. Their names are Jerry and Kyle. Now since this is my last night, and I won't get paid if I leave early, how 'bout I make you a nice drink, on the house!" Oscar took his freshly cleaned glass and filled it up with some newly brewed beer.
"Oh...I'm sorry, I don't drink." She said shyly.
Oscar looked at her and smiled. "Oh of course you drink! Come on, at least try some!"
Jenny sighed and took it from him gently, and looked around the bar for an empty seat. All of the tables were full or nearly full, except for one in the very back corner of the room. It had three empty seats, with a fourth seat where a tall man sat while intently reading a newspaper. She quietly walked over and sat in the seat directly in front of the man. She looked and saw that the man's glass was empty. She mustered up her courage, and tapped the man on his shoulder.
"Excuse me sir, would you like my drink?" Jenny said, "I got this for free, and I don't drink. I saw your glass was empty and-"
"For free? You must be a very pretty lady if someone gave you a free drink." The man said, peeking over his newspaper. He had long purple locks and opaque red skin.
"O-oh, no, I just got it because I am going to start working here tomorrow." She said, blushing a little.
"Oh really? Because you look like a very cute girl indeed!" The man laughed. He put down his newspaper and smirked, revealing his crooked teeth. "My name's Thrax, what's yours?" He cooed. He had long spidery fingers, with pointed ends.
"J-Jenny." She stammered. She would be lying if she said he wasn't handsome. "What am I thinking? He is a fucking germ, or worse!" She thought to herself.
"Jenny, what a pretty name." He said, flattering her. "So tell me Jenny, baby, why is a young girl like you working at a place like this?"
Jenny frowned and gave a depressed look. "Oh...I got laid off." She said, putting her head in her hands.
"So I see." Thrax said quietly, as Jenny began sniffling.
"I can barely pay the bills as it is! And I have to come up with the money soon, or I will be kicked out of my apartment!"
This gave Thrax an idea. "Hmm, such a shame. Too bad you don't have anyone to stay with." He said, trying to act cool. "I do have an empty room where I am staying. I am out-of-body as you could imagine. I will only be staying here a few more days anyway. It would help you concentrate on working instead of being in that stressful apartment." He said, looking at his nails, trying to hide a smirk.
Jenny sighed. He was right; there was no way in the world she would be able to make money at an already stressful job, living in her slum of an apartment. But what was he planning? A germ like him couldn't possibly be up to any good.
"I don't know..." She mumbled.
Thrax growled, irritated. "If you don't like, you can always leave. I will put the key by your bedside." Thrax said. "Trust me. If I wanted to kill you, I would've already done it, dear."
Jenny ignored her better judgment and nodded. "Ok then, I will go. But my father is a cop! And if you try anything, expect your ass dead!" She said sternly.
Thrax smiled. "You have my word."
Suddenly, a drunk germ stumbled and threw a glass at Oscar. "That's what you get, you lil' booger!" The germ slurred.
Oscar growled. "I said, you had enough!"
Jenny groaned. "Can we please leave?"
This made Thrax sigh, since he enjoyed watching the drunks. "Of course, my car is the red one outside." He got up and reached for Jenny's hand. She pulled away, blushing.
"I'm s-sorry..." She said. Thrax rolled his eyes and waited for her to get up, leading her to the door.
