A face without a name,
just senseless letters and numbers
branded on this patient's shirt
as he lies prostrate on the metal table.
His back is cold, but his front is moist
with sweat-- the result of the electrifying shocks
that singed his mind, obliterating
all the painful cries,
all the happy laughs.
His reward is a blank slate,
a new chapter that he is free to create.
Make your edits, your insertions,
a new introduction, XYAG3476.
You certainly would not want to begin
your epic as a murderer again, correct?
Then again, all stories should have their prologues.
You may re-write your life, but you will always be
a wingless bird in an open cage,
never reaching the tantalizing freedom,
and the much needed chance for repentance.
A face with a name,
a new identity that is ready
to take on a new flight.
But a wingless bird cannot fly.

A/N: This was a poem I wrote for a poetry course. I wanted to capture the introduction of the SH Homecoming through a poem, one that shows Alex is chained to his sins/crimes as much as he wants to change his ways by creating another persona for himself. I hope this turned out okay. Unlike other poems that I had written, I didn't get a chance to revise this one at all, so essentially this is my purely, raw, first take on the introduction. Please leave your comments/thoughts in a review. I always appreciate my reader's opinions, and as always, thank you for taking your time to check out my works!
