Artemis Fowl the Second was not a happy teenager. He was outside, which was in itself unusual and made him rather irritable. He was tired; had not had a good night's sleep in months. At night he was constantly plagued with dreams of things he did not understand. It was not often Artemis came across something he did not understand, and the dreams only added to his testiness. The dreams were of snow, ice, an old Butler lying dead- no, sleeping on a couch. Someone with a child's height, but a woman's proportions. Bright hazel eyes. A horse, with a human head. A centaur, they were called? He supposed so, but he still didn't know what the dreams meant.
He wasn't, for once, out on some audacious, brilliant plot sure to enhance the Fowl funds by billions. No, his was a simple cause today. Food.
See, Butler had taken to stocking Redding's caviar (which Artemis found detestable) when their usual brand was bought by another company. Artemis refused to eat it any longer, so Butler had insisted Artemis accompany him to the store and pick out which kind he liked.
In truth, Butler had just wanted Artemis to get outside, because the youth was clearly disturbed about something. He wasn't plotting, or sleeping, or eating, and talking even less than he usually did. He looked almost as if someone had taken a swing or two at him, the rings around his emotionless blue eyes were so dark. It didn't help that he was pale as snow to begin with. He was starting to look positively undead. It wasn't healthy, and Artemis's health was always the first thing on Butler's mind.
Artemis sighed. Once inside the grocery store, he wandered away from Butler into the candy section, eyeing the annoyingly bright packages with disdain. As if the bright colors would dazzle anyone into thinking the product was in the least bit appetizing. Two children ran up and grabbed a bag of chocolate, ripping it open and eating it as they ran back around him to their mother.
Clearly bright colors were too much for some minds.
Butler kept a cautious eye on Artemis, and smiled at the children. They ran in the opposite direction as fast as their bowed little legs could carry them. For some reason, he often had that effect on small people.
There was a sample of free lollipops in the corner. Artemis moved towards it, disgusted with himself for wanting a closer look at the bright red solidified sugar sticks. But something in him was stirring, and he didn't say no. It was just another way that Artemis was different now, then what he had used to been.
As he stooped to pick up a lollipop, a voice rang clearly into his head.
"if you're a good Mud Boy, maybe I'll bring you back a lollipop"
Artemis stayed like that for a long time, hunched over the basket of lollipops, as the memory of the one time in his life he had not come up with a sufficient, witty comment came back. He didn't like lollipops, honestly. That was quite possibly the stupidest thing he had ever thought, let alone said, in the presence of anyone. And who had outdone him? Holly. Captain Holly Short of the LEP.
It was all coming back.
Slowly, Artemis rose. He smiled his vampiric, evil-child-prodigy-who-has- come-up-with-an-evil-brilliant-plan smile.
He had some fairies to extort.
