Author's Note: Hey there. So it's been a while since I posted anything. Well here's something new for you!
This oneshot. As the summary said it's about Sam's first Christmas without Jessica. It's sad. I won't lie about that. The idea for this came to me while listening to Sarah McLachlan's Winter Song. I also wrote it while listening to Winter Song. So if you wanna really get in the mood of the story, you should listen to that song.
That's it.
Read and enjoy.
Sam stared up at the ceiling of the small lake side cabin him and Dean were currently renting. He had been staring at the same wooden ceiling for almost three weeks.
The hunt was over and yet Dean felt they should stay.
The young hunter knew why.
His brother felt that some time off would do him some good.
This was, after all, his first holiday season since the tragic death of his beloved girlfriend.
But that was exactly why he wanted to go.
He needed to be on the move. Researching. Hunting. Killing.
He had to consume his mind with the heinous, macabre world of the supernatural.
Because if he didn't… There was only one other thing to think about.
Jessica.
Closing his eyes tightly, Sam futilely fought off the sudden pain in his chest.
He missed her so damn much.
And he had thought it was hard to live these past few months without her. Without her smile. Without the smell of her freshly washed hair. Without the feel of her body pressed tightly against his as they lay down to sleep at night.
But he was finding that those first few weeks had been nothing.
This.
Now.
That's what really hurt.
Winter had always been Jessica's favorite time of year.
She had never cared about presents. They never crossed her mind.
It was the sense of home and closeness she loved.
The chance to help those less fortunate than her bring Santa to their children.
Having a tree to decorate with her family.
And the snow.
She always loved the purity the white powder brought to the world around her. The way it crunched under her feet. How it numbed her feet, fingers, and nose.
But her favorite thing about the snow was how much Sam hated it.
For Jessica, Sam remembered as he slipped into his clothes and coat, it wasn't Christmas morning unless she had dragged Sam out into the powder covered backyard of her parent's house in Minnesota.
He'd always acted like it was bothersome and he was merely indulging her. But it hadn't taken him very long to figure out that the chilly weather and frozen toes were a small price to pay to see the smile on her face as she danced around the yard.
As he stepped out of the cabin and onto the snowy bank of the frozen lake, he noted the sun was just beginning to rise, nothing more than a pink sliver on the horizon.
Perfect, he thought.
This was always the time of morning that Jess would drag him out of bed to dance in the snow.
"There's nothing more beautiful than watching the sun rise on a snowy world," he remembered her saying once.
So he sat down on the steps of the rented cabin he was sharing with his brother and looked out at the snow white horizon imagining he was sitting in the backyard of a suburban home in Minnesota.
And for just a minute, as the sun shimmered behind the trees surrounding the lake, Sam could swear he saw a smiling blonde dancing along the shore of the lake.
"Merry Christmas, Jess."
