I don't own Harry Potter, and I really don't have any issue with Hufflepuff (but, shhhh, don't tell Hufflepufflin that) other than the fact there's a sparkly faerie princess in it (and you can blame Hufflepufflin for that... - go check out chapter two of her "A Hogwarts Love Story" if you want to know why). This it a companion piece to my story "Ravenclaw", which is kinda the same thing from Hermione's point of view - you should go check it out!
Anyway, enjoy!
You should have been in Hufflepuff.
It's not the first time you've thought it, and you know it won't be the last. Because it's true.
It is. It has to be. You're too stupid for Ravenclaw and you'd die before anyone put you in bloody Slytherin – but you shouldn't be in Gryffindor. What does that leave but Hufflepuff?
You're not courageous enough to be a Gryffindor. Courageous. A word you learned from her, the Gryffindor girl that is smart enough to be in Ravenclaw – but she's not because, Grodricdamn it, she's the single bravest person you've ever met – braver, even than your best mate.
You've never stood a chance, have you? You're not smart or brave or handsome or a million other things she deserves. Merlin's pants, She deserves everything – everything you can't give. The only thing that consoles you is that she also deserves more than any of them can give her – the world-famous Quidditch player, the pretty boy, the ferret – hell, even your own brother.
But they can still give her more than you.
Face it, you'll never be anything she deserves – anything she wants – and you know it. The only thing you've ever been is loyal (even if you did leave or fight or whatever the bloody hell, you always came back). Loyalty. The Hufflepuff trait.
And maybe that's why you did it – are doing it. To prove to yourself that you aren't loyal – that you don't belong in Hufflepuff. Or maybe that you're brave. Brave enough to give her up – the love of your life – in favor of her not-so-Ravenclaw roommate. Brave enough to just watch from afar. Brave enough to let her have a better life – a life without you irritating and upsetting (and loving) her.
You know you always will love her – it's not something you can escape. But she doesn't need to know that. If she found out, she'd just stay with you to make you happy. She's too big-hearted, too kind, like that. No, you can never tell her.
Maybe you can still be close to her, though, even if it's just as friends. Maybe she can still be a part of the family – you know your brother's interested – even if it isn't with you. Maybe you could deal with it. Maybe you can do what's best for her.
And maybe that's why you're a Gryffindor. Because yes, you're loyal, but maybe you're brave because of it. Because maybe your courage rears its noble head when it comes to the people you're loyal to. And maybe one day she'll see that. Maybe she'll love it – love you.
Maybe you don't belong in Hufflepuff, then, because, yes, you are loyal – but you're braver than any Hufflepuff because of it. And maybe that's enough to be in Gryffindor – enough to be her Gryffindor.
