He watched her intently from behind the tree. He watched, but did not tease her, did not, in fact, give any indication at all that what she was doing was at all out of the ordinary. This in itself was very unusual. For Leanna Bailey was, without a doubt the most unusual girl at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. And as everyone knows, unusual students are those most often preyed upon by those who have a mind to be cruel.
It was a crisp Autumn day, and the lawn was littered with students out trying to enjoy the last few days of good weather before the harsh Scottish winter set in. The seventh-year Ravenclaw sat a little way away from the others. Her school bag was open; a copy of the new magazine The Quibbler was sticking out.
"Secti!" Sparks flew from her wand, lighting up her wide silver-blue eyes with bright flecks of orange and green.
"Oh." She said softly to herself. "Perhaps not." She closed her prominent eyes for a moment, and when she opened them again, they were shining with inspiration. "Greek maybe."
"Feta!" There was a loud bang, a burst of orange and grey. The tendrils of her long blond hair that had escaped their loose knot were now burning, but so intent was she on the dried frogs in front of her that she not notice for some time. When her smoldering locks finally drew her attention, she watched them with interest for a few moments before extinguishing them with a flick of her wand. Her tranquil expression seemed to indicated that this was not a uncommon occurrence. Once more she pointed her wand at her burnt hair, which was now up to her chin. "Elongare." At once her hair began to rapidly lengthen, until it once again fell almost to her waist.
Turning her attention back to the frogs, she raised her wand once more. "Sectus!" she said, this time making a single slashing motion across the frog. More sparks issued from her wand, however they seemed to have no effect on the frog.
She narrowed her eyes in determination, though on her, narrowed eyes where about the size of an average person's. She made the slashing motion once more, this time shouting "Sectum!" The motion of her wand was matched exactly on her frog as it was cut cleanly in half.
"Well," she said thoughtfully, "that will save time in potions class."
Hidden behind the tree, he smiled. Yes, Leanna Bailey was a very unusual girl. But she was also very, very, helpful. Her little discovery, with the proper application of course, could be very — useful. It would need some adjustment, some addition. But it would be excellent, he thought, for enemies. For Severus Snape had a mind to be cruel.
