Prologue
He was intoxicating. From the moment she saw him stomping across the field she knew in her heart that there was no going back. A ten-year old Amber Millington sat on the school's only rust-free swing. Dressed in a black wool coat over her school jumper, black nylons underneath her uniform skirt, pink leg warmers peeking out from her favourite riding boots and her pin-straight blond hair kept beneath a pink knit beanie; she watched.
Across from where she sat, an angry ten-year old Fabian Rutter stormed across the damp winter field. He wore an old, orange coloured winter coat and matching snow pants. His cheeks were beating red and his bare hands were clenched tight as he moved along. Intrigued Amber analysed the boy as each of his boots imprinted the ground.
"FABIO!" Jerome Clarke, the school's most sinister 10 year old resident called to Fabian. "WHERE YOU GOING FABIO?" His insult conducted a choir of Jerome's followers to snicker. Ignoring them, Fabian trudged faster towards the school. Amber watched Jerome and his stupid friends tease Fabian and suddenly the need to protect him came over her.
Amber was a daddy's girl and her daddy wasn't just another parent but a "VERRRRRY important man" as she liked to call him. A slight thud could be heard as Amber jumped off the swing. "FABIO, FABIO, FABIO!" The taunting boys sung in harmony. Quickly, Amber ran over to them. "STOP!" The boys looked at the petite girl who had challenged them. Jerome's annoyed expression turned into an ashamed one when he realized that he had brought on the attention of Amber. Suddenly, Jerome's crew grew an interest in their mucky, winter boots.
"Leave him alone." Amber said, hands on her hips. She looked from Jerome and the boys to where Fabian had been walking; he had stopped to watch the girl defend him. Even though there was a distance between the two, Amber was sure she saw a small smile on his face. Little did either of the two innocent kids know that, that smile would ignite a story. Their story.
