Single Combat
A/N: When the Christian invasion began of the lands populated by the Germanic peoples, many rumors abounded. One of these was that Thor, the God of Thunder, had challenged Jesus to single combat. I conversed with Thor about this (I am a Norse Pagan, or Heathen if you prefer) and this is how He told me the battle would have gone.
Thor and Jesus stood at opposite ends of a beach. Thor gripped Mjollner, His hammer, in a grip that would have shattered the strongest stone in any of the Nine Worlds. Jesus stood with his hands folded in front of him, his eyes closed. Thor called to the distant upstart who had invaded the lands held by the people who followed Him and His Brethren among the Aesir and Vanir. "Will you fight me, carpenter?" He called, "Or will you be struck down where you stand?"
Jesus opened his eyes and unfolded his hands. "I cannot best you in a battle of weapons, Thor," he said, his soft voice somehow carrying across the roaring of the waves. "I battle with words, fighting injustice with my wits. I know little of armed combat."
Thor's hand tightened on Mjollner, his face becoming as red as his hair and beard. "Do you call the extinction of My followers justice?" He yelled. "If so, then I spit on you and yours."
Jesus slowly shook his head. "No. What my followers are doing is neither just nor wise. If they would listen to my voice in their hearts, they would hear me tell them to lay down their weapons and accept your followers as brothers."
And Thor smiled and hung Mjollner from a hook on His belt. And Thor and Jesus walked to each other and embraced as brothers. When they parted Thor, patted Jesus on the shoulder. "Well fought, friend," He said, "for the way of a warrior lies not with his weapons, but with his mind and his heart."
And those in the world of Midgard who listened with their hearts knew that both Gods could live together in harmony.
A/N: So, whaddya think? I'm probably treading on thin ice by posting this in the Bible section of this archive, but I thought it would be the most appropriate place. Any reviews, positive or negative, are welcome, as long as they are neither abusive, nor mocking of my faith.
