Authors Note: Okay! Here's my first Bones story. It's based on the trailers and promotional photos for season six, so I guess it's set sort of after episode 1. I wasn't entirely sure what Booth's girlfriend was called, but Hannah was ringing a bell, so I went with that. There is a flashback, which is written in italics. Let me know where you think I could improve it, if there are any errors I have missed etc. AND please review, they make me happy :) Enjoy-Ange

Disclaimer: I do not own Bones

Nothing quite works out the way we expect. That was true. Angela Montenegro knew that. Jack Hodgins knew that. Cam Saroyan knew that. Seeley Booth knew that. But most of all Temperance Brennan knew that.

Booth took a step closer and closed his hand around hers, "One year from today, we meet at the reflecting pool on the mall. Right by the-"

"Coffee cart," Brennan smiled sadly. "I know. One year from today."

Seven months later and she was sitting by the reflecting pool, waiting for him. He arrived, they talked. Booth had met someone knew. Brennan was sad, but knew, nothing ever quite worked out the way they expected.

Angela was pregnant, that one, everyone was expecting.

Sweets has facial hair. Mind blowing. Brennan and Angela had barely been able to contain their laughter, Booth and Hodgins had let loose, it truly was funny. Daisy, however, had found it very manly.

But, despite Booth's blonde bimbo, Brennan and Booth were even closer.

Booth entered the diner and grinned at his partner, "Hey Bones."

Brennan grinned, over the past seven months she had really missed being called Bones. She lifted her head to look at him as he sat across from her. Her fringe fell into her eyes and she blew a quick breath upwards to move it.

"Booth," she greeted.

He reached over and stole a chip off her plate, "Mmm, these are good. I missed these chips."

"Me too," agreed Brennan. "It seems trivial to miss something as simple as a cut potato drowning in salt."

"Naw," Booth disagreed. "Creature comforts Bones, creature comforts."

She smiled and pushed her plate towards him, "I missed you Booth."

"Missed you too Bones," Booth was slightly disturbed by her random display of affection.

She just grinned and ate another chip, "As bad as the reasons for coming back early are, I'm glad we did."

"Me too," Booth replied. "I feel like I've just woken up after a long sleep."

"Hibernation."

"What?"

"A long sleep is called hibernation," Brennan explained.

"Oh," Booth helped himself to another handful of chips. "Yeah, it's funny though, I've even missed you correcting me."

"Creature comforts?" she tilted her head, causing her fringe to fall back into her eyes.

"Yeah Bones," Booth replied, brushing the hair away from her eyes. "Creature comforts."

"Seeley?" a sad voice interrupted them.

The pair looked up, there was Booth's new girlfriend, Hannah.

"Hi Hannah" Brennan greeted. "How are you."

Hannah ignored her, "I should have known. I could feel the tension between you two. You could have just told me Seel."

"Told you what?" Booth asked.

"That you and her," Hannah spat out the word 'her' as though it were a bug she had swallowed. "Were together."

"What?" a unanimous response.

"We're not together," Booth told her.

"Never have been, probably never will be," Brennan added.

"Sure," Hannah laughed. "Hide it all you want. I know that there is something going on between you two. Bye Seeley."

With that she turned on her heel and left.

"What just happened?" Brennan asked, chasing a cold chip through the tomato sauce.

"I think she just broke up with me," Booth was still staring at the spot where Hannah had been standing.

"Oh," Brennan reached across the table and put her hand on top of his. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah," Booth sighed. "I wasn't expecting that."

Brennan patted his hand and leaned back in her chair, "Funny how things work out, isn't it?"
