So this is pretty sad, haven't been feeling all that great and this idea came to me. I didn't realize how depressing it was till i finished it. Really rough, and short!, but I don't think it's too bad. Again I apologize for this, and this isn't how i feel it should have gone. R&R.
What's right? What's the easy choice, the clear path? For Temperance Brennan there had never been a path of least resistance, with no obstacles. Not one that she could see anyway. Self reliance teaches you a lot of things, a necessity to be impervious being the one Brennan took to heart. Trust, love, dependence. Those had not been among the lessons, in fact being things to avoid for her. But something had shattered the careful world she built, the iron walls around her heart. A pain she hadn't felt for a while, a fear she wasn't used to.
When Vincent got shot, that day, something had changed in her. It could have been Booth, should have been... NO. Forget thoughts of her own life, She had too very close friends to think about. And then there was the blood. Red and spurting, oozing between Booth's fingers, as Vincent lay on the floor. " Please don't make me go" was all he kept repeating, like it was her fault he was dying, like she could change it. IT isn't MY fault! She had to keep repeating, but to no avail. And that image, those words, kept running through her head, on a constant loop. She couldn't handle it. Then Booth had insisted on taking her to his apartment, her staying with him. And he'd been there for her, to hold her, to love her, to make love to her. Everything had changed that night, more than Booth knew.
Booth and Brennan walked along the street, and she couldn't help rethinking everything, what path is right? Kept dominating her thoughts, and her uncertainty was visible on her face.
"They looked so happy." her voice was wavering, and she kept telling herself to compartmentalize, something she'd always been good at. Not today.
'"Well yeah, they had a baby." Booth sounded so sure, as if that was obvious.
"their whole lives have changed, you'd think they'd be a little more apprehensive."
"Well, you know, havin' a baby, that's a good thing.
"You really think that?" she turned to look at him, and he stopped, seeing her expression.
"Yeah that's a great thing. Why, what? Oh, come on Bones." Another uncertain look from Brennan," Look the baby, the baby's fine. It's healthy. Healthy baby. All right? They love each other, this is the happiest day of their lives. OK?"
To her his little speech sounded like the longest monologue ever, a very irrational thought considering it was barely 15 seconds long, and she couldn't hold back her worry. "What?" Booths voice cut into her thoughts.
"I-I'm pregnant." He wavered then smiled, she smiled back, and everything seemed okay, a pristine moment. Finally the world was turning in the right direction.
An annoying beeping cut into the scene, at first seeming like a car alarm. The image of happiness began to dissolve. Brennan opened her eyes, the annoying sound of her alarm clock cutting into a perfect dream, followed by a view of the harsh reality. A frown settled on her face, a single tear sliding from her eye. "It was all a dream," she whispered. A dream of today, what she hoped would come, a fool's paradise.
