Ava stayed in the shadows, her heart beating out of her chest as she waited for the signal. She was staring down at what appears to be a normal looking cabin just outside of Indiana but something else was happening on the inside. This was one of the bases of the hunters who presumably have taken ahold of a mutant inside. It was a scenario that Ava was far too familiar with. It wasn't that long ago when she was actually fearing for her life because of these men who seek to have greater power.
She passed the test with flying colors when the Professor made her go through scenarios of what the X-Men had to endure. It took less than a month but she was cleared to be of use to the X-Men for their next missions. So far, they've been focusing on shutting down the hunters who have been chasing Ava for nearly a decade and it came to no surprise that this was her first mission.
"Everybody in position" an angry sounded man said into her ear.
"Yes, Wolverine" Gambit's voice came in, "As we have told you we would be right when we land"
"You think you're funny, bub?" Wolverine challenged, making Ava roll her eyes.
"Enough" Cyclops ordered, "Our job is to retrieve the mutant and end this facility, alright"
Storm replied, "Let's go… Artemis"
Hearing her codename made Ava jump into action as she glanced up to the full moon out tonight. Using the power she learned, she made the light of the moon appear stronger than before as it shone on the hideout. The men that were outside seemed confused at the light before lunar beams came crashing down on them. They screamed and tried to take cover but then thunder crackled and lightning shot down at their automobiles. Ava came out of her hiding spot and went down to the building.
A man saw her coming and aimed his gun at her, Ava wasted no time in shooting out a lunar beam, hitting him in the chest. A crimson light shot off to the side of her as a man hollered and fell down the slope. Cyclops appeared as Ava gave him a nod and turned and looked back to the house.
"The others are luring them to the otherside of the building" Cyclops informed, "You ready?"
"Yes" Ava said without a moment's hesitation, "Good, let's go!"
"He should be held in the basement" Ava reported, "It seems to be the trend to keep the hostages underground"
"Seems to be that way" Cyclops fired off his laser, "I'll cover you"
Ava burst out into the clearing as she could hear shots being fired all around her.
Even though Cyclops had said he was going to cover her, Ava still summoned her force field in case anything should go south. Since he was an experienced X-Man, no stray bullets hit her as she ran into the dark house and waited for attackers. They seemed surprised that she was even able to get through the door as she shot at her. Ava waved out her hand and sent a white light crashing them into the wall before she ran down the hall. Outside suddenly started to get dark as Storm used cloud cover to drive out the hunters.
"I'm going downstairs now" Ava alerted the team.
"Alright, cher, I'll be there in a minute" Gambit grunted as he fought off someone.
"She can handle this herself, lover boy" Wolverine said.
"Oh, I know she can" Gambit responded, "I just want to watch"
Ava couldn't help but roll her eyes as she bounded down the stairs. She's used to the two bickering back and forth to one another but she can easily see how it pisses off everyone else. When she got to the bottom, she summoned up a small bright moon and let it lead her as it it was her personal guide. She started having flashbacks of the building that she was trapped in New Orleans, almost mesmerized at how similar it looked.
A door opened to her right as she sent the little moon crashing into the room as several yelled could be heard. By the time she got to the room, she noticed two hunters were lying unconscious thanks to her moon. Ava spared no sympathy for them as she ran down the hallway to the end.
She sent a lunar beam crashing into a door as she heard yells from fright. Ava jumped into the room but then stopped as she looked around.
It looked exactly like the room she was locked in; all the symbols and everything as if she hadn't left.
"Oh, thank God!" the man breathed out.
"Artemis, did you find the hostage?" Cyclops asked.
"Artemis?"
The man looked at Ava who was looking around wide-eyed, "Y-you a-are here to save me, right?"
Ava looked at him as he repeated, "Right?"
"Artemis, come in!"
Ava looked around at the signs and symbols as the sense of terror overwhelmed her, forgetting about her mission. She glanced down to her fingertips as she noticed they were visibly shaking as tingling numbness took over. She took a couple of steps back as the Ava felt dizzy and her heart raced so fast that she thought it was levitating out of her body. Ava quickly turned around and ran out of the room, slamming the door shut behind her despite the man's protests. She collapsed down to her hands and knees, ready to faint at any given moment.
The blood rushed to her ears but she didn't know if it was her blood or the whirring of the machine slowly turning and working its way to life. She can hear the yell of the man, begging her to open the door but it sounded like Aren, her twin brother. Except, she couldn't move, she couldn't make herself turn back to the room and open the door. Ava let out a strangled sob as the feeling of numbness sent her crashing to her elbows.
Pounding footsteps came from the end of the hall as Ava let out a scream and brought up her forcefield. She knew they couldn't get to her but still rammed herself up against the corner anyways, shaking and putting herself into a fetal position. She wasn't going back, she'll never go back.
"Moonshine!" a voice broke her thoughts.
There was only one person who called her that, making Ava peek up from her knees. Gambit was outside of her forcefield, using her bo staff to balance him on the balls of his feet.
She suddenly dropped the field and slammed her body into him, squeezing hold of him tightly.
"Shh… Shh…" Gambit cooed, "It's okay, moonshine, I got you"
Ava leaned her nose into the crook of his neck and took a sniff as she felt him comfort her. A shadow walked by as she glanced up and froze. The hostage was walking out with Storm who had her hand on his shoulder. The pair were giving her the same look, pity. It then dawned on Ava that it wasn't her room she was experiencing but the man's room.
All of the rooms look the same to convert the mutants to energy. Ava should've known that this was going to happen and prepared herself. But the second she came into the room, everything faded away, even the world. Ava looked back and saw some of the same symbols, making her stomach turn as she quickly looked away.
"Oh, my God" Ava mumbled.
Gambit somehow sensed this as he scooped her up into his arms and walked her away from the room. Ava still shook as she shrank into him as Storm led the group out of the building where Cyclops and Wolverine were waiting. They stopped their conversation short when they noticed the hostage walking out on both legs but the rescuer was being held onto.
Gambit gave them a stern shake of the head, telling them to drop it. They seemed to listen as Cyclops went over to the hostage to assess if he was alright.
"I failed, didn't I?" Ava asked.
Gambit sighed as he sat her down on a far off bench.
He couldn't say anything but just stroke her head and have her lean into him. His girlfriend still trembled from what she experienced. Remy couldn't help but feel stupid to think she could go about this alone. He's been in the room of energy convergence before, he remembered how it felt as if it was ripping him apart. How could it have possibly slip his mind that this wouldn't affect Ava in the long run?
He's been taking down these guys for three months now, realizing that each room looked exactly the same. Remy mentally kicked himself over and over for not thinking of Ava's experience first.
"No, cher, just a setback" Remy told her.
"What happened to me?" Ava asked, "What is happening to me?"
"I don't know, but we'll ask the Professor once we get back" Remy promised.
