notes: written for a friend because we all know what's going to happen but god if ryuuken doesn't pull your heartstrings ;-;

They are in a dream.

At least, that's what Ryuuken thinks, watching as the strange shinigami with the integrity of a man so selfless disappears. Masaki's body is there beside him, but she's breathing very slightly—it makes Ryuuken scared to look at her.

But still he does, albeit horrified behind his rimmed lenses, heart breaking into the tiniest of pieces.

He loves her, after all. He loves her, he loves her, and the feeling has only continued to grow over the years. An aching emotion, for it succeeds in doing to him.

Her laugh, her smile, the naughty twinkle in her eyes, the way she perpetually acts without thinking because she has such a clear sense of right and wrong. And then she'd bat her long lashes and giggle in that enchanted way that would cause all memories to disappear from his mind instantaneously.

He loves her, he loves her, he loves her.

It's not enough though, he knows, gazing at her fluttering eyelids and the shinigami who was no longer there, sacrificing the life he had for a girl he had barely met.

The two are in a dream and Ryuuken doesn't find that he can break it—

—(not like

the broken pieces

of his heart.)
