Well, he kissed her.
"Finally," is what Harley will say when Drew tells him later. Solidad will be completely shocked... but happy, of course. Possibly too happy.
How did it happen?
That's either a far too complicated question, or a very simple one.
If you want the simple answer, then that's easy. He just did it. He walked up to May and he kissed her. It wasn't well thought out or perfectly coordinated, but that didn't matter. After all, it had been May herself who had taught Drew one of the most important things he'd ever learn: it was okay to take risks sometimes. Not everything had to be well thought out or perfectly coordinated.
But that isn't the only answer. There is, as I said before, another one. It's complicated and messy, and Drew probably doesn't know it himself. If you asked him, though, he'd probably say something along these lines.
First of all, the way she looked.
It was enough to make his heart beat faster than normal and his palms sweat. She was laughing at something her friend Ash had said, her hair blowing in the gentle breeze, her eyes sparkling. No! Don't laugh! He's serious! She was gorgeous, incomparable, intoxicating...
Well, he may go on for awhile about the way she looked, but the point is, it made him want to kiss her. Oh, but don't you go anywhere yet! That's not nearly all of it.
Second, the way she looked at him.
Drew is five hundred percent certain there was a gentle suggestion in her eyes as she caught his gaze. Not to mention her eyes in general. The deepest blue of a sapphire, sparkling in the summer sunshine as they reflected the ocean...
He might start gushing again here. Actually, he definitely will. It's not like it's any secret how desperately in love he is, after all. But wait, there's more!
Third, the fact that they were on a beach.
That alone set the scene perfectly. They had been on a beach when they first met. They had shared a deep, heartfelt conversation while looking out over a beach at sunset. They had been on a beach when they talked after the Grand Festival.
The fact was, beaches were kind of a thing they had by now, so what better place for a first kiss? And, much as he will never admit it, Drew is a hopeless romantic sometimes. He was the one giving her roses, after all. When he was ten.
So she looked gorgeous. She was looking at him in a way that only May could look at him. The setting was perfect...
And boy was Drew jealous.
Of course, there was absolutely no foundation in this jealousy, none at all. He knew Ash and May's relationship was entirely friendly. He knew because she had flatly told him. However, he was still entirely not okay with seeing her laugh so easily with another guy.
It wasn't like he could tell her that, obviously. And he couldn't go up and threaten Ash either. May was perfectly allowed to be friends with other guys, and Drew wasn't even dating her to begin with.
So he couldn't do anything about it...
Except.
He could show Ash up.
He could do something to make sure that Ash knew May was absolutely off limits to him.
Yeah, so maybe it was pretty possessive, but some tiny part of Drew was telling him that he needed to claim May as his. Call it what you want, primitive instinct, plain old jealousy... Drew just didn't want May ending up with anyone but him.
So there you have it. May looked gorgeous. The setting was perfect. She was looking at him and smiling. Drew wanted her to be his, and he wanted everyone to know that; he wanted May to know that.
Oh, and I left out the most important part...
He just wanted to kiss her.
