They were a world apart and Wolfram was really feeling the strain, his heart aching with longing for his husband. He sat in bed, trying to read a book, unable to do so because his thoughts were full of Yuuri, who was back on Earth, tending to his responsibilities.
Months ago, Yuuri and His Eminence left Shin Makoku to study, then take their final exams. They had done the same for their midterms earlier that year, and Wolfram had agreed to take over as king while his husband was gone on both accounts.
It wasn't an especially demanding task for Wolfram. Thanks to Yuuri's naive yet effective leadership, much like he climate, the people of Shin Makoku were living in a Golden Age, free from the burdens of famine and war. There was little in the ways of crime. The people lived comfortable, peaceful lives, protected by the soldiers from the castle whenever trouble arose, which was a pretty rare occurrence nowadays.
The only thing that upset the balance of his life was Yuuri's absence. Wolfram sighed and laid his head down onto his pillow, setting the book aside. He turned over and stared at the empty space beside him. Yuuri had been away for a few months now, just like last time, and Wolfram missed him with everything that he had.
His Eminence said that they'd be gone longer this time. They had been given two days to take their midterms while they were given three days to take their final exams. It was difficult for even His Eminence to determine how much time would pass in this world while they were gone. Time passed much faster in this world than on Earth and to factor in the amount of time that they spent studying and the time that they spent taking the tests themselves - it was hard to tell.
Rain began to patter on the windows. It was gentle, soothing and reminded Wolfram of Yuuri, who was the same exact way. It made him smile. He reached out for the other pillow and held it close to his chest, closing his eyes.
Just when he started to doze off, he felt a wave of powerful energy pass through him, jolting him wide awake. He sat up and looked at the glass doors to the right of the bed. The source of this strong feeling was coming from the balcony.
Wolfram stepped out of bed and hurried towards the balcony, opening the glass doors. The spark in his heart grew bigger and bigger as a figure formed right in front of his eyes. It was as if the rain were the watercolors and the weather was the painter that brought Yuuri to him. The sight took his breath away. Yuuri's hair was wet and dripping and his black clothes clung onto him, much like Wolfram wanted to in that moment.
"Hey," Yuuri greeted him with a warm smile. "I'm back."
Wolfram was dazzled. Yuuri had so much more control over his powers than he had before. He had the ability to move freely between both worlds through water. The fact that Yuuri was standing before him now meant that he wanted to see him and found a way to do just that.
Wolfram flung himself at Yuuri and held onto him tight, paying no mind to the rain that soaked his nightgown through.
"Wolfram," Yuui said his name, his voice thick with emotion. When Yuuri said his name, it held so much meaning to him. When Yuuri said his name, Wolfram heard their history, he heard everything that they ever went through to reach this point.
Wolfram pulled back to gaze into his husband's eyes and it was like looking into the night sky with countless stars shining down on him. Just a few years ago, Wolfram could only hope to be with Yuuri, to have his love returned, and now, his hopes were fully realized.
"Yuuri," Wolfram said his name with love, warmth, and tenderness and gave him a kiss to match.
