Disclaimer: The world of Harry Potter belongs to the ever-brilliant J.K. Rowling.

A/N: I've decided to go ahead with my plan on a multi-chapter for Tom-Kriya. Here's the prologue – I'll start posting chapters in due course.

Many thanks to langeline and sheensangel for reviewing my two-parter Light on the couple!

Defying Destiny: Prologue

She could see it all.

A touch of mist obscured her vision just so, but it was all there.

A woman lay on the floor, surrounded by a pool of her own blood. Her long, curly locks hid evidence of most of the torture her body had been forced to bear for what looked like a long period of time – forced because this woman emanated a kind of power that rendered her very much capable of defeating her captor, and yet, she lay there, with innumerable wounds marking her body and pain slicing her soul.

Despite her wretched condition, the prisoner managed to lift her gaze to the empty space in front of her just seconds before the figure of a man materialized there, nearly collapsing with the realization of what was to follow.

No, she heard her whisper. She saw fear contort her face and heard her cry of anguish. It cut through her like a shard of glass. She wasn't only seeing, but also feeling.

"Get the hell away from my wife, Grindelwald," the man snarled, pointing his wand directly at the chest of her captor. Rage flew off of him in waves, and it only further intensified at the visual confirmation of his doubts – he'd felt his wife's condition mentally but to experience it physically, first-hand had been soul-ripping.

"Ah, and here I was under the impression that you two have separated," the man named Grindelwald sneered.

"Our relationship transcends your understanding of what it means to be together," replied the prisoner's husband, as he made his way to her.

What she saw next was nothing short of incredible, and Ulupi Slytherin woke up gasping for air, terrified and awestruck at the images her mind had conceived.
