He still couldn't believe he'd done it.

Going out with the sister?

It violated every rule in the book.

The younger sister on the rebound from a bad marriage and with a kid to boot?

That had 'bad idea' written on it in every language he could read and then some.

But he did it anyway.

He'd never been one for the book, and frankly he'd always had a fondness for bad ideas.

Besides, she was cute. And carefree. And despite everything, she was happy.

That was a refreshing change for him.

He enjoyed it.

But at the end of the night, he'd only pecked her on the cheek.

He could have gone much further, and he knew it, but he didn't.

The fact that he checked himself scared the shit out of him, actually, but he still pulled back.

She'd eyed him oddly then, and his only response was an embarrassed grin.

She nodded in understanding then and kissed him on his forehead.

Now it was his turn to be puzzled.

She shook her head at him, then lightly pushed him away.

Nothing was said, but both understood.

Even a sister is a poor substitute for the real thing.
