Author's Note: Written for a challenge on the As The Stargate Turns Yahoo Group, to write a 100 to 500 word ficlet containing "I am a nobody, and nobody is perfect; therefore I am perfect", and the word jam. This ficlet is exactly 500 words.
One Heck of a Day"Thanks for helping me out of this jam, Carter."
"You're welcome sir. I'm surprised you couldn't fix it."
"You are waaay better at this kind of stuff than me."
Sam wondered if he was being disingenuous. Was this an excuse to get her round here? She hoped so.
"I always thought you were a pretty good mechanic, General. Remember back in 1969…?"
"How could I forget? A good year, if I recall, which I can; both of my 1969s. Nobody's perfect Carter, not even me." He winked.
"Really?" She turned back to the engine of the truck, quietly muttering, "I am a nobody, and nobody is perfect; therefore I am perfect."
"Carter?" Jack looked at her quizzically, furrowing his eyebrows, and she caught his puzzled expression as she turned back to face him. "Get worried. You're beginning to sound like me."
"I am? Oops, that's kind of scary," she teased, "actually, I do believe I got that from you now I come to think of it."
"That's right, mock the afflicted, why don't ya?" he joked, "Yeah, well it doesn't sound right coming from you, Carter. I'm the nobody, you're the perfect one."
"I am? Um… thank you sir. I-I…"
Jack was smiling in that flirtatious way he sometimes did and Sam looked at her feet, a blush on her face at his compliment.
"Sam…" he started, but faltered.
Sam? She looked at him again, peering into his eyes to discern his intentions. His face turned pink as he fumbled for words. Sam wondered if this was it. She'd been waiting for him to make a move ever since she'd changed her chain of command, but he hadn't and she'd been disappointed, debating whether she should do it but unsure that she had the nerve anymore. She was almost convinced that their chance was gone, just like the old SG-1.
"Yes?"
She gave him her full attention, downing her tools and wiping her hands on an old rag. Jack was desperately trying to find the courage that had provoked him to call her while she was in town, and Sam could plainly see his uncertainty.
"Have you thought about calling me Jack now I'm not your CO anymore?" It wasn't what he wanted to say, but it was a starter for ten.
"I'd like that… Jack."
He took a deep breath, moving closer.
"You look cute with engine oil smudged on your face," he ventured and Sam smiled shyly, almost closing the remaining gap.
"What were you going to say?" she asked and he blurted it out nervously.
"You do know I didn't really ask you round to fix my truck, don't you?"
"I was kind of hoping…"
Seizing the moment, he pulled her close for a kiss.
"The oil!" she cried.
"What's a bit of oil between friends?" he countered, locking lips, tongues and bodies.
"Mmmm… you look cute with oil smudges too," she teased, kissing him again.
It was turning out to be one heck of a day.
