Midmorning
The air was thick with mid morning heat inside the Third Music Room. The windows were all opened allowing the smallest of breezes through the large space. The smell of the garden wafted in and settled around the large loveseat that housed two teenage boys, one intent on finishing his pile of homework while the other tried valiantly to concentrate on his ledger book, memorizing and quizzing himself on the minutest details of the royal families.
"Kyouya?" The blond looked over at his best friend patiently. As seconds turned to minutes he tried again. "Kyouya?" Rimless glasses glared at the blond for seconds before they became transparent and instead framed soft brown eyes. Kyouya nodded as he studied the solemn boy next to him, he cocked his head when Tamaki, his companion, remained silent.
Tamaki turned to stare ahead of him, thought better of it and tilted his face forward, his shaggy hair hiding his eyes from the observant boy next to him.
As the silence wasted into minutes Kyouya slid closer to the usually wilder of the two and brushed soft blond strands away from contemplative eyes. His fingers allowed the pesky strands to return to their place as he held Tamaki's pale cheek in his palm. He turned the paler face towards his and nearly jolted when in the blondes' eyes he saw doubt, something that had no right to be there.
"Tamak-," Kyouya was stopped when his friend spoke up.
"Will we always be together?" The question was simple and would have made more sense coming from the mouth of an elementary student, but for some reason made just as much sense at that moment in time, from someone twice that age.
Kyouya began to respond but stopped. His initial response was to reprimand his friend for asking such a foolish question. People would never be friends forever no matter what everyone said. Humans didn't have the ability to love forever either, why stand around wishing and asking for something that could never happen. Instead he stared into sad blue eyes and promised something he could never give.
"Of course Tamaki, we'll always be together." The guilt that ate at his insides was put to rest when a smile spread across Tamaki's beautiful face and he lunged for Kyouya. Even if they weren't guaranteed their forever, they always had today.
