The Werewolf
It was fall and the excited children
Did run and jump in the leaves;
All destroyed were the piles,
And the children played continuously.
"Beware the werewolves, my peer!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the fearsome bird and shun
The ferocious troll!"
They took there brand swords in hand:
Long time the invincible foe they sought –
So rested they by the nectarine tree.
And sat awhile in thought.
And as in deep thought they stood.
The werewolf, with eyes so bright,
Came snarling through the ominous wood,
And howled as it ran!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The branch sword went swish flap!
They left it dead, and with its head
They went jogging back.
"And have you slain the werewolves?
Come to my arms, my heroic boys!
What a triumphant day! Hip-hip hooray!"
He exclaimed in his excitement.
It was fall and the excited children
Did run and jump in the leaves;
All destroyed were the piles,
And the children played continuously.
