Shattered Hopes

Why did she have to leave?

She's a princess. She needs to be with her people, helping them rebuild.

But she didn't have to leave in the way she did. She didn't have to break the mirror.

Even Hyrule's best mages combined cannot piece the mystical item together. They say there are too many pieces, too much energy circulating that it is impossible to connect them properly.

I refuse to accept that.

I've been here for two days, working. The fairies give me strength when I need it. But even with all my efforts, part of me knows it is impossible.

Why did she have to leave?

She was one being who helped me when no one else would.

Of course, she was really helping herself in helping me. But she still helped me.

And even when it was beyond her needs, she stayed.

Perhaps it was because she felt the same as I. We were both beasts to our worlds, hideous creatures that should not be allowed to exist. Neither of us was willing to accept our position. Both of us fought to belong again.

Why did she have to leave?

I enjoyed her company. She was always quick with a remark, shrewd regardless of the company. But she was a comforting weight to my shoulders.

I wish I could talk with her again, to feel her on my shoulders, even if it means returning to our cursed forms. As long as we are together.

"Is it love?" some might ask. They might say so.

I won't say it's not.

But she's a princess. I am a simple farmer. A courageous farmer perhaps, but a farmer just the same.

That can't stop me.

My finger slips. A piece of mirror slides along my skin, cutting a long line. I watch as the red liquid slowly collects and drips onto the pieces I've already collected.

With a sigh, I look up at the stone slab that she passed through. Somewhere, through time and space, I can feel her. She is still beautiful, still looking at me with that smile.

Why did she have to leave me?

A/N: I wanted to do another first-person tragedy. This is the result. I kind of like it. LinkXMidna isn't one of my favorite pairings, but it works for this type of story.
