The slow electronic beeping was almost hesitant. Like the heart it was monitoring did not quite beat. The small hospital room was crammed with enough equipment for an entire ward, leaving just enough space for the bed and a the single chair with it's lone occupant. She had been there for the past three days holding his hand and willing him to get better. She had left only long enough to shower and catch a few hours sleep and a meal the day before when the doctors had insisted.
"Tommy," She whispered, almost able to say his name without her voice breaking. "I am so sorry. Please don't leave me." She felt more tears slide down her face as she lent down to gently brush her lips over his cheek. "I love you." She sobbed as she said that. Laying her head down on his chest she fancied she could hear his heartbeat. Closing her eyes she went over ever second he had been in her life.
A small sound woke her. She lifted her head gasped. Tommy was twitching and groaning. The heart monitor was beeping quicker now, rapid beeps filled the air, as his movements became more pronounced, almost violent. Panic filled her, quickly she slammed the emergency call button next to his bed and used all her little weight to try and hold him down. Moments later the door flew open and a team of doctors and nurses rushed in and surrounded them. Firm hands replaced hers holding him down better than she ever could.
"Get her out of here." One of the doctors barked as a nurse guided her out into the hallway, as the rapid beeping became a high-pitched whine.
"We're losing him! Get me a crash cart. Now!"
Seconds later two nurses rushed past her with a defibulator, leaving the door ajar in their haste.
"Give me one-sixty." The Doctor's voice called. "Clear." Tommy's body bounced sharply and the whine continued.
"Two-twenty. Clear." He commanded. Tommy bounced again and the Doctor stepped back. "You'd better get her in here." The crowd around the bed parted and she saw Tommy struggle to lift his head. Rushing to his side she took his hand.
"Oh my god, Tommy I was so worried I had lost you." She was weeping now, hot tears of joy streaming down her face. Tommy looked at her, his pupils dancing while he tried to focus. He took a deep breath and swallowed.
"Kim, What happened?"
