Dead Until Summer

Chapter 1: Useless Things

As I came out of my day slumber, the first sound to penetrate the stillness of the evening is the high pitched squealing of the human children across the lake from my lake house. It was just before sunset, and my hunger was at a peak. I sat up and dressed quickly, then waited for the sun to set. When it finally did, I heard the children groan as their parents herded them back in. I smirked and exited my day room. Maneuvering through the house, I came to the doors leading outside and opened them, breathing in deeply as I did so. I caught the faint scent of the humans all around the lake and zeroed in on the hut across the lake where the three children were just going inside. One child had strawberry blond hair and was obviously the oldest of the three. The middle child was a light blond boy who was chatting with his parents that were behind him. The smallest of the three was a little blond girl who had stopped and turned around, gazing at her surroundings as she did so. I noticed that she was frowning, making her blue eyes crinkle in confusion. She then turned and ran to catch up with the others. I waited until they were inside then took to the air to find my dinner.

After glamouring my feed-and-fuck, I flew back to my lake house and dived into the water to rid myself of the disgusting scent that clung to my clothes. As reckless as it was to do so, I couldn't stand the house's poor excuse for a shower as the water wasn't nearly as pure and stimulating as the lake was. As I emerged from the lake, I hear a faint gasp and quickly spun around to discover to my surprise that the little blonde girl had come back out and was standing on the edge of the pier, staring straight at me in shock. I growled to myself and flew towards her, stopping so that I was floating right in front of her. Because I was so close to her I could see that she was in fact unusually beautiful for a human. Her long blond hair was a few shades lighter than my own, and her blue eyes sparkled with hidden intelligence. She jumped at my closeness and stared straight into my eyes, making my job a lot easier. But as I pressed my influence on her, I discovered that it wasn't working. It was like clawing at a slippery surface. I couldn't get a hold on her. I furrowed my brows and tried again. She shook her head as if to clear it, then, to my utter shock, she ran. Snarling, I suppressed the instinctual urge to capture and drain her, but I was not going to risk exposure over the existence of one puny little human child. Something told me that to kill this child would not be wise. I also wanted to see what made her resistant to my glamour.

I followed her scent and came upon a pathway that had been worn down by years of use. After a minute of following the trail, I crossed a stream and came across a tunnel between two boulders. I could both hear and smell the girl moving through the tunnel. I flew up and over the boulders and came across a waterfall in a cove. From my spot in the sky, I could see the girl ducking behind the waterfall. She spotted me and huddled even further into the space behind the falls. After a moment of staring at each other she cocked her head and furrowed her brows. She then got up and walked towards me, getting her shoes wet in the process. She looked up at me and squinted hard as if focusing on something. She then proceeded to shock me by asking;

"Why can't I hear you?"
