Okay guys, this little heart-breaker was dreamed up after listening to As You Turn Away by Lady Antelbellum, its a H/C without the comfort, I'm afraid. If you haven't heard the song, you might wanna check it out or this might not make much sense.
She knew it was coming, standing in his arms, her face pressed against his chest. Something in him had changed, that part of him that was always unreachable coming to the front and pulling the man she loved away. As he leaned down to kiss her cheek she knew this was it. Looking up into his eyes she saw the wall there. He was going to say it, and there was no way to stop him.
She whispered his name softly, hoping against hope he would reconsider, that he would stay with her, come back to her, keep her heart in one piece in his hands. He stepped out of her arms slowly, kissing her forehead. "We can't." Was all he said.
He pulled out of her arms, stepping back and looking down at her. She brushed her fingers across her cheeks, wiping away the traitorous tears that had begun to fall. She was stronger than this, and the pain coursing through her heart was all her fault. She had promised herself that she wasn't going to fall for him, not after all this time, but she had. She had fallen too hard, too fast, and it scared her how much it was hurting to lose him. He took her hand, caressing the back of her hand with his thumb before kissing her knuckles and allowing her to pull her hand out of his. "Please don't." She whispered.
There was no way to live with what was happening, no way to keep what they had before it all happened, before she let herself fall in love with him, with his eyes, that mischievous twinkle that gave him away, his easy smile, his intelligence, but most of all the fact that he adored her. He would do anything for her, which was why she fell so fast. And the worst of it, she understood every bit of it.
He took another step back, looking her in the eyes. "Its time." He said, smiling sadly at her and nodding. He leaned forward, kissing her cheek again softly. "Goodbye," he whispered, "I love you. I always have."
He turned and began walking to the door, his stride even, footsteps not making a sound. "Wait, stop." She said, tears coursing down her cheeks in waves, biting her bottom lip and swallowing the painful lump in her throat. "Please don't go." She said. "Stay, stay with me. Stay!" She said. Every step he was taking away from her broke her heart further, the pain too great. He turned as his hand reached the knob, taking one more look in her tear filled eyes, his own in the same watery state. "Nikola...I love you." The door was opened and he walked through without a sound, slowly swinging shut, the light fading.
Hundreds of miles away, in a nondescript testing facility, their latest experiment failed, the injections becoming too much for their test subject. Nikola Tesla flat-lined, gasping his last breath with Helen's name on his lips.
