I don't know why I'm here.

It's all so strange.

My parents are dentists.

And what am I?

A witch.

A witch for goodness sake.

How is this possible?

I'd never heard of witches, wizards, Muggles, and certainly not Hogwarts before the letter came last month. It was simple, a plain, creamy white envelope with my name written on the side in flourishing black letters. But what was strange about the envelope was its contents. At first, I thought it was all a joke. I didn't tell my parents. In fact, the letter scared me somewhat. I was doing well in school. Extremely well, if you don't mind my bragging. I had many close friends. If this school was real, I didn't want to give up all that just to go learn some silly magic tricks. After all, that's what this Hogwarts was, wasn't it? A school of "magic" could only be for magic tricks, aspiring magicians like the ones I had seen on television. Real magic wasn't real after all, everyone knew that.

I just ignored the letter and went on with life as usual. However, then we received a visit. A strict-looking woman dressed in long black robes, unusual clothing for the summertime, rang the doorbell one morning. I remember thinking that it was strange that she should appear so suddenly on our doorstep because all I had seen just moments before was a rather sleek tabby cat, sunning itself in the early rays of light. She immediately introduced herself:

"Hello," she extended her hand, "I am Professor McGonagall." She had a rather brisk way of speaking, a bit sharp too.

"Um, hello," my mother replied politely, "And what brings you to call upon our home?"

"I am a teacher at Hogwarts School of Magic and I have come to confirm that Miss Hermione Granger has received her letter and will be attending school beginning next week." Professor McGonagall continued.

My mother just stood there looking slightly bewildered.

"I sorry, I do not understand. What do you mean by magic? And what is this Hogwarts? I have never heard of it before." I turned slightly red at my mother's words.

"Mom, I may have forgotten to-" I managed to force the words out.

"Oh dear, I take it that you did not show your parents the letter?" I nodded slowly, "Well then, I guess we'll have to start from the beginning." And true to her word, she began to explain everything, from Hogwarts to Muggles to magic.

To be honest, all the rest is quite a blur. Professor McGonagall told us that we were to go to a place called Diagon Alley in order to purchase the supplies I would need for the coming school year. My mother just nodded, still in shock at all this new information. I knew my mother well. She was a very pragmatic and straight-forward person. This wouldn't be easy for her. Accepting the fact that I was a witch, I mean. I'm not even sure that I can accept that.

I'm a witch.

How?
