White Ribbon

"Anzu-chan!"

Miho's happy cry made Anzu jump with surprise as she came out of the school doors. Quickly composing herself, she looked round to see Miho standing to her right, schoolbag held steady in front of her knees and a sweet smile on her face.

"Miho," Anzu smiled back. "You waited for me? You didn't have to. But thank you."

"I wanted to give you something," she said. "So I waited until you were done with your cleaning duty today."

"You could have given it to me earlier."

"No," Miho shook her head, rather stubbornly. "I only want Anzu-chan to see. Close your eyes and hold out your hand."

Anzu felt tired, especially after discovering that Jounouchi had been firing spit balls into a corner and having to scrape them off. But, all the same, she always had time for Miho. So she closed her eyes and held out her hand. There was the faint sound of cloth being rustled. Then soft hands took hold of hers and gently raised her middle finger a little. It felt like something was being tied round it.

"Okay. You can open them again."

Anzu opened her eyes to discover that Miho had tied a small white ribbon to her middle finger.

"For White Day," Miho beamed happily. "Do you like it?"

"I ... I do," it was one of those rare moments when Anzu wasn't quite sure what to say. "Did you say it was for White Day?"

"Yes," Miho nodded. "Because you gave me a little box of chocolates on Valentines. So I'm giving a gift back, because that's what you do."

"I gave Yugi, Jounouchi and Honda a little box of chocolates too," said Anzu, then wished that she hadn't because it made Miho's smile fade a little bit.

"I know that White Day is supposed to be when boys give presents to girls," she said, shuffling one foot in front of her. "But I think it should be when you give a present to someone you really like."

Something tightened in Anzu's chest, yet somehow she knew that it was something good. She held up her hand, admiring the small white ribbon that Miho had tied so neatly around her middle finger. Anzu noticed that it was tied in the same way Miho wore her own ribbon in her hair.

"Maybe you're right," Anzu said. "And I think it's perfect. Thank you Miho."

Miho smiled, her cheeks a shade darker all of a sudden.

"Come on," Anzu held out the hand with the small ribbon tied to it. "I'll walk you home. We could do some study together."

"I'd like that," she said, taking Anzu's hand. "And I brought the cutest skirt last weekend. I haven't shown it to you yet. You've got to see it, Anzu-chan!"

Anzu smiled. "Sounds great."
