Preface
The breeze of a warm August night whistled by an upstairs window on a dark house on Spinner's End. The boy who's room accompanied the window drew his blankets tighter around his skinny body. Despite the late hour, the boy was wide awake, listening to the ruckus coming from downstairs.
"I've told you time and time again, Tobais! He's a wizard! I've known since he was born! What more did you expect." A woman's voice came first, raise, but rational.
"Listen here, you pagan whore-"The man's words where slurred, alcohol the culprit. The woman cut in.
"Tobias, you're being irrational. Put the flask down. Here, have some coffee-"
CRASH! The sound of glass shattering on hardwood made the boy jump, and he whimpered. The sound of the woman sobbing made him draw the blankets even tighter around him. But suddenly, his worst fears where realized. Two feet came thumping up the stairs.
"Trash, just like his mother. I'll show him. I'll beat the magic right out of him if I have to." Came that drunken voice. The boy jumped out of bed, scared to death. He ran to lock his bedroom door, but it clicked shut before he got halfway there. The man jiggled the doorknob, before pounding on the wooden portal.
"Open this door right now, you no good, snot-nosed BRAT! OPEN IT! NOW! OR SO HELP ME GOD, I'LL FUCKING KILL YOU." The man screamed.
The boy sat down on the floor, holding his head in his hands. He began to rock back and forth, the pounding, the screaming, the crying, rushing around him. The last thing he saw before he passed out was the moon light pouring in his window.
