Of Shaving and Fur

"Romulus!" I jostled my brother then growled, "Look! He's doing it again!"

"Why?" Romulus tilted his head as we peeked around the door. "It's his fur."

I shook myself then sunk to my belly and crawled across the slippery floor, creeping up next to where Alpha stood in front of his mirror. He held the funny claw that was not a sword or a knife next to his face and then cut his fur off. And it wasn't even very thick fur. "Alpha, why would you want to scrape your fur off?"

Maybe Alpha didn't understand he would be nice and warm for winter if he let his face fur grow properly. Alpha barked then winced.

I titled my head, worried at the smell of blood. "Did it bite you again, King Edmund?"

Alpha's lips pulled up in a smile. "The razor isn't alive, Remus. But it did bite."

"Oh. But why would you want to scrape your fur off? You would be warmer with it. And you wouldn't have to worry about the razor biting you anymore."

Alpha barked softly and I could smell his amusement. I wagged my tail. Alpha was happy and I liked seeing Alpha happy. "I have to shave." Alpha brought the biting razor up again. His sparse fur fell into the bowl. I still didn't understand why Alpha would want to take his fur away. It was his fur!

"But, if Aslan gave you such very little fur, shouldn't you keep it all?"

"I think Aslan understands, Remus."

But Aslan was covered in fur too. I tilted my head again, watching as Alpha ruined his fur. "Are you going to shave the rest off?"

"What? Ow." Alpha patted at where the razor had bit him again. "No, I'm done. See?"

"But what about your fur on top of your head? If you want to scrape off your fur, shouldn't you scrape off all of it?"

Alpha put his paw on top of his fur. "No!" Then he barked in amusement again and I knew I wasn't in trouble. "Remus, I like my fur, I mean, hair very much. I just don't want a beard."

Humans were strange. Even Alpha and he was the most like a Wolf.
